Default Cel animation on Blu-ray?

hey can someone tell me why The animations/cartoons are slow to come out on blu-ray. I have yet to see one. I have seen the CGI but no actual cartoons. What's up with that?

um let me put it in prospective for u the best sellign title the departed has only sold 100 000 copies and it was released a long time ago the average movie only sells like 15 000 so the market is soooooo small plus dragon ball z is coming out

There are a few, but most are either anime (imports), or will be coming soon.

Two 2D animation titles availible in the US now:

Ultimate Avengers (Lionsgate/Marvel), and A Scanner Darkly.

That's it. Another title to be released by Lionsgate/Marvel in 2 weeks: Doctor Strange. Sony will be releasing their first anime title in the US on Sep 25: Tekkon Kinkreet.

Bandai will be releasing a few of their anime movies here in the US in combo packs with DVDs at the insane retail price of $80!!!! I won't be purchasing any of those.

I highly recommend everyone pick up Sony's Tekkon Kinkreet as they are probably gaging future releases based on its sales.

Anime is coming, but at a much slower rate because the market is so small to begin with. Here's a list of released and upcoming anime in HD:

Sleeping Beauty will be the first Disney 2D on Blu-ray according to some sort of Disney marketing sheet, or something like that, that surfaced a little while back.

Just a rumor, with no concrete date. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. Their 1967 film "Jungle Book" is supposed to come out before Sleeping Beauty.

Not a rumour, see this post and the linked press release.
Disney Platinum releases have concrete dates, 2 releases to a year. That one is scheduled for October '08.

I imagine 'The Simpsons Movie' will be on BD this fall or early winter.

If Disney releases the Original Theatrical version of The Lion King, I will buy it. But, if they release the artistically vandalized version I will not buy it. Same goes for the Little Mermaid. I want the original theatrical releases, not the edited versions.

I read that post and as far as I'm concerned when there's no set date it's just a rumor.

It's not a rumor. The Disney Platinum schedule is well known, and they've publically stated it'll be their first animation BR

Aeon Flux Animated MTV set and Heavy Metal with a complete audio overhaul would be interesting. The audio on the Heavier, Louder, Nastier Special Edition DVD set of Heavy Metal that came out a few years ago was HORRENDOUS! And this was even the Superbit edition! It sounded as if they synched the sound up from a boombox sitting in the corner of the room.

I'd pick up any Pixar Blu Ray film, but damn they're slow on getting those out.

So a press release by Disney is now a rumor?

Mastered on analog video. And it would just be extra ugly then anyway.

Welcome to low budget film production.

Don't expect more than 1 catalog title a year either. 1 new, 1 old. This year it's Ratatouille and Cars, next year Wall-E and maybe Incredibles and so on
