I just signed up for Skype for the first time, and I love it so far.

Instead of paying ridiculous prices for cell phone plans (locked in for years) or landlines with the corrupt Qwest (screwed me over many times), I signed up for a 2.95 a month (no taxes, I was billed 2.95) and it's free to USA/Canada landlines and cellphones, plus to other skypers it's free anyway.

Whoo hoo!

It actually is pretty cool. The only thing that turned me off from using it as a permanent service was the fact that I would probably have to get a separate computer barebones to handle all the calls. I just decided to keep my landline/cellphone even though the savings would have been pretty big.

You can actually buy a USB handset that plugs into your PC. There are also Skype specific handsets that work on WiFi.

My main issue is that my computer is not on all the time even when I'm home. I was thinking about getting a barebones computer to keep on most of the day but then I just decided to scrap the idea.

However, I do think the Skype to Skype calls are awesome. You can call anyone in the world, right? And it's free that way also. That is pretty damn sweet.

I believe they sell phones which can be configured for Skype. They work wireless or wired. No need for computer to be on. They are independent.

There are whole ton to choose from.
