I have read in a thread here which names VERY BAD looking BluRay transfers. Total Recall and First Blood come to mind to use but two examples. My question is this. Do they look as equal to their DVD counterparts or better but just slightly. Please elaborate if you will, those owning the two said movies or voluteer other movies if you wish to compare.
I would be shocked that a BluRay could compare in PQ to that of a DVD but perhaps such a phenomenon exists? Curious minds would like to know. |

So far Tomb Raider is the worst quality BD I've seen. It's been quite some time since I've seen the original DVD release, however I think Spiderman 2 Superbit outshines the BD of Tomb Raider. The older movies I've watched (Coming To America & Untouchables) were pretty impressive, particularly Untouchables.

Oh, ok, yes, it got kind of confusing there for me on what you were referring to. The Untouchables is a good movie...I will have to pick it up since there have been good referrals here on the board about it.

I have not watched a DVD since I got my PS3. I have only been watching Blurays. Last night I threw in LOTR Return of the King extended edition (the 4 disc version), just for fun. It looked amazing. Some of the distance shot, especially the faces seemed a bit blurred, but everything else looked crystal clear. The close ups and the textures were quite vivid. I have never seen a DVD perform so well on my DLP big screen. I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI. I played a DVD with a LG up converting DVD player at 720P, and I noticed the pixels shifting around blurring the image. But not now at PS3 1080p, the pixels are static. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had similar results with this movie or another movie. I want LOTR on Bluray but seeing this, I can wait a bit longer; but not too much.

I bought a Denon upconverting DVD player a few months before the PS3 came out (2930i or something like that, I think . . . 1930 maybe, I dunno) and returned it after Monsters Inc. proved to look worse on the upconverter vs. my Denon DVD-1600 standard progressive scan player. The Ps3 didn't have this problem, so my treasured 1600 has been replaced.
In the same vein, I popped in the Fellowship Extended disc a few weeks ago, and for a DVD, I was pretty impressed. |

There are some titles that have been only slightly improved by the transfer, but I would have to say that I have been spoiled by the newer releases and I hardly ever watch DVD movies any more even though I have a huge selection. It reminds me how I felt when I switched from VHS to DVD.

I don't have many double dips, so I don't have much to compare, but I have copies of Knight's Tale in BD and Superbit.
Knight's Tale on BD did not get good reviews for PQ (and it doesn't deserve them). Particularly when you pause on outdoor scenes, there is obvious artifacting around leaves etc. OTOH, it was my first superbit dvd and at the time, it made my jaw drop. PQ was great, and resolved far more detail than any dvd I'd seen to that point in time. Even now, the PQ ranks pretty high relative to other dvds. So, how do they compare? No question, the BD shows more detail than the superbit dvd. I compared a few shots side by side (ps3 playing BD, nvidia card doing the upscaling). Every comparison showed more detail in the BD. Now for some of the other "worst" movies in that thread. I have Dirty Dozen and Bullitt, and Dirty Dozen in particular does have some scenes that are very low detail compared to the best in that movie. Quite noticeable also. Bullitt is not so bad. Even in their best scenes neither would compare to, say, POTC or Prestige, but I'd sure expect their best scenes to be better than the best you'd find on dvd. Dirty Dozen's worst scenes may be no better than dvd. By the way, I watch on a 1080p projector on a 106" wide screen. |

In short, to directly answer the thread topic IMO, as bad as some Blu-Ray transfers can be they are still by far better than their DVD counterparts.

Agreed, although tomb raider was really damn close to being the dvd quality, some scenes were still more impressive on blu ray.

I think Lethal Weapon 2 looks better on my standard DVD than the Bluray. I know I've posted several replies bashing this title but i can't get over how bad it is. The detail is probably still slightly better on the BD but the pixelated look just makes it far less watchable than the SD DVD. I am comparing the SD DVD upconverted through a DVDO VP50 de-interlacer/scaler to the BD version on the PS3...I've compared same scenes and asked a friend too who knows nothing about BD or SD etc, and she too thought the SD one looked better...she said "eww" to the BD one. All my other BD's look great (except superman).

mmm.. reading your plight again gives me the idea of trying to watch LW2 downscaled to 720 and upscaled back to 1080 (or higher

The BD version of Untouchables is dirt cheap at wal mart at 18 dollars, what more could you want? and how could you complain?

I have a feeling all(or most) of these generation 1 titles may see re-issues in the future. The technology was new and the movies may have been rushed just to have them on the shelf. But now we are consistently getting top tier titles with great P and AQ(mostly) so DD on blu-ray might begin. well, it has already, I guess
