Default Everyday Shooter

Chain Reaction Gameplay

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA)
Developer: Queasy Games / Jonathan Mak
Platform: Exclusively on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) via PLAYSTATION®Network
Genre: Musical Action Arcade
Rating: “E” for Everyone
Price: $9.99
Available: October 11th, 2007

Developed solely by Jonathan Mak, Everyday Shooter won three awards at the Independent Gaming Festival at the 2007 Game Developers Conference. Now available for download on PS3, Everyday Shooter is unlike traditional arcade shooters. The sound effects in Everyday Shooter play in musical harmony with the game’s background music, leading to a constant and harmonic interaction between the music, gameplay and visuals. Throughout the album of games in Everyday Shooter, typical arcade sounds of destruction are replaced with guitar riffs harmonizing over an all-guitar soundtrack, also produced by Jonathan Mak. Everyday Shooter breathes life into simple mathematical formulas to create stunning visuals and a musical masterpiece on PS3.

KEY FEATURES
  • Play an Album of Games – Every level in Everyday Shooter delivers a unique all-guitar soundtrack, blurring the line between playing a game and listening to an album. Players experience constant and harmonic interaction between the music, gameplay and visuals.
  • Unique Chaining Mechanisms - Each level includes a unique chaining mechanism that players can master to maximize scores.
  • A Variety of Unlockables – Play to unlock extras, including visual effects like a painter effect, a single shade effect, a contrast effect and more.

There is an article in Game Informer on this game in a recent issue. Supposedly the game ties the music into the gameplay more than any other similar game. It has won numerous indie awards for game design and music production.

My thoughts

When I started up Everyday Shooter, my first instinct was "Eh, this wont blow me away like I thought it would." About 30 seconds later I was entranced. Simple nothing graphics, AMAZING sound that hypnotizes you, and a challenge. It is NOT easy. I only made it to track 2. Stuff comes flying out at you from EVERYwhere. You're eyes really need to see in multiple places at once. And the sound. It's entrancing. And as your 'attacks' make the music, it's like playing it for the first time every time you play.

SOOO happy with my purchase.

Thanks for the mini-review u nick!

I have FlOw and Super Stardust HD and enjoy both games. While I’m curious about Everyday Shooter (love the concept), I’m not sure if I need another shooter.

So anyone else like to share their thought and opinions on this game? I’d love to hear what others think.

I had a strong feeling this was going to be an overhyped title... and I feel it was. It's kind of fun and the interaction with the music is kind of cool... but Stardust is still a lot more fun. It's so so. The UNLOCKABLES feature is kind of cool, and will probably bring me back to play it a few more times.

If you don't have an ASTERIODS clone yet... just buy Stardust instead.

I don't see how a game with so little hype can be overhyped (unless it's terrible, which I'm sure it isnt) but whatever.

They've been hyping up the fact that it won many awards.

I bought it - and I'm not impressed. A neat concept - but it really doesn't live up to the promise. When you shoot something, I thought I woud hear guitar riffs and have a kind of cool - song that's never the same - instead, when you hit something, it makes a semi-sounding guitar sound, and most of the hits sound the same.

Maybe if I was on drugs this game would be cool.

I am only on the second level - and the gameplay may deepen - but initial impressions leave me thinking I may have just wasted $10 on a blind buy.

I'm gonna wait for a price drop on this one, it just didn't look all that impressive to me.
