Default New Denon 1610 - Not impressed yet. Volume issues

Just got a 1610 setup it up with the mic and that was pretty painless. I was however not impressed by the sound. There was almost no sub. It had my sub at -12db and the volume knob on the sub was a 1/2. It set my front Cerwin Vega's to Large (which they are) and crossed over at 40. So I went in and changed the front to small and changed the crossover to 120. As well change to subwoofer to LFE and 120. Then manually turned up the sub with the knob on back. Not really sure how anyone could be impressed with that orginal sound. Again there was next to no bass.
My second issue is I have to watch TV almost at 0db or 85 on absolute. Why do I need to "crank" it to hear things? It seems I am near max volume just to watch a 5.1 movie at theater volume. Also why do you have to turn and turn an turn the volume know to go form 0 to 85 (absolute). My old Sony I barely had to turn the knob to get an increase in volume on this. It seems I need to do a full 360 turn to get a medium volume increase.

IS ALL OF THIS NORMAL? I am ready to ditch this for a Pioneer or go back to my old Sony 5.1

Thanks,
Haas75
