Talking Splice Review Thread

This film actually looks pretty damn good, lots of great projects to come out of Sundance this year. The pics look really great, but the poster is just a tad bit too much 'Aliens' IMO.

One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Vincenzo Natali’s Splice. Starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic scientists that create a new life form with severe consequences, the film is original, dark, twisted, and it looks like a Hollywood produced film. Basically, it’s a perfect film for a studio to buy and release on thousands of screens around the world.

And it looks like that’s going to happen, as Joel Silver and his Dark Castle label are close to landing the film with a P&A commitment north of $25 million (the money they’re going to spend to promote the film). Also, part of the deal calls for the film to get released this summer on 3,000 screens. Trust me, if they market the film right, this thing could be huge.

While most Sundance deals get made for a few million and the promise of a limited release, if this thing comes together, it will be one of the biggest deals in the history of Sundance and one of the widest releases.

BEen interested in it for Adrien Brody's involvement and now that I see Guillermo presents it, he's known for having good taste.

Have you seen Guillermo Del Toro Presents The Orphanage? I love everything that guy has been involved with.

No, too lazy. I get lazy when it comes down to foreign flicks. I'm still trying to finish Che.

That is true. I think Orphanage is even more frightening because you're put in uncomfortable territory where you don't understand the english language and you feel a tad bit scared because face it, we dread the unknown but are curious to what's in it.

Yeah that's part of why I love foreign horror, it's so different from the american crap that's been done thousands of times, some of the scariest foreign horror I've ever seen came from Brazil and Spain.

Check out the first clip here (click the img). It's nothing we haven't seen before but I still found it creepy...

Default Splice gets a June 4

Quote:
Splice, the new film by Vincenzo Natali (Cube) has been the subject of a lot of talk for a long time, especially since it’s been tagged with the header “Guillermo del Toro Presents” – big endorsement for a sci-fi/horror film.

In our last update, we let you know that Warner Bros. and super-producer Joel “The Matrix” Silver were looking to distribute Splice and now we know when the movie will be officially hitting theaters.

Who would’ve guessed that Splice would be entering the blockbuster arena of the Summer 2010 lineup?

That’s right, Splice has been given a June 4th release date by WB, placing it alongside the Ashton Kutcher/Katherine Heigl action-rom-com Killers and the pet-friendly kids film, Marmaduke. Against that sort of competition, I’d say that Splice is being released at exactly the right time for a strong box office showing.

For those not familiar, Splice stars Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead) as two hot-shot scientists who specialize in gene splicing. After successfully splicing several animal species into a hybrid organism, the pair decide to go a step further and introduce human DNA into the mix. The resulting lifeform may be the next rung in the evolutionary ladder – or humanity’s worst nightmare.

Splice has been buzzed about for so long now I almost have no choice but to see it. The reaction at Sundance was admittedly mixed, but those who liked it really liked it. If you haven’t seen the clips and stills from Splice, you should definitely take a look. Might get your interest up.

As stated, Splice will be in theaters on June 4, 2010.

I saw "Splice" at Sundance this past January. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Put it this way: the movie is draining. I went with two of my friends and one of them was dead silent for like 20 minutes, b/c he didn't know what to say. Just don't go in expecting the routine.

I've seen movies where I didn't know what to say afterwards from shock alone.

I hope it does well, but I'm sure many people won't get it. They'll want just a monster movie with people getting killed off, but it's definitely not that type of movie.
