Black Dynamite (2/16) - Another amazing Sony title gets the distribution Shaft

Remember last month when Moon came out and nobody could find it in-store anywhere? Most Best Buys only got 2 copies, if they got any at all, and you couldn't find it at Target or Wal-Mart either. Basically Amazon was your only option.

Well tomorrow Black Dynamite comes out - hands down one of the most hilarious movies of 2009. It got a very limited theatrical release from Sony, much like Moon, despite overwhelming critical praise and very positive feedback from audiences.

Except this time Best Buy won't even be carrying the title at all. Nor will Target or Wal-Mart. You may have luck at Barnes and Noble or Fry's, but 90% of people will have to buy this movie from Amazon if they want to own it.

What gives, Sony? Why are you denying the general public some of your amazing lesser-known titles?

Retail stores are shrinking stocks of niche titles for basically all forms of media. Visit your local Best Buy or Walmart, and check out the limited breadth of cds and dvds they carry. Any titles below a certain threshold in sales potential are being completely ignored by the major retailers. The situation is only going to get worse as physical media declines in popularity. Amazon is the solution to the problem.

I almost canceled my AMZ preorder to use RZ certificates on this. It already shipped today so I couldn't cancel anymore but now I'm glad I didn't. Thanks for the heads up... no wonder it wasn't in the BB weekly ad.

Best Buy will be carrying all the new releases from the Criterion Collection and Studio Canal Collection tomorrow. You're trying to tell me that Black Dynamite, a release from a major studio (Sony), is more of a niche title than Hunger, Revanche, Lola Montes, Ran, The Ladykillers, and Contempt?

Best Buy is also getting Coco Before Chanel, which is another very limited release title from Sony.

Edit: Oddly, the DVD is available at Best Buy, but not the Blu-ray. You can't do site to store pick up on it, but you can check stores. I did check stores and it's not grayed out. That doesn't make sense that they'll sell the DVD and not the Blu-ray.

That's too bad, I thought this movie was great and highly recommend people check it out. It was shot on 16mm and is meant to look like a cheap old movie so temper your PQ expectations accordingly.

Sometime today, BB disabled in-store pickup for tomorrow's releases. Black Dynamite was available for in-store pickup.

From all the word of mouth and reviews I went ahead and ordered this a little while ago. It'll be here on Thursday. I'm pretty psyched!

I just saw this at walmarts tonight. I was going to get it but it was $25 so I will wait. Walmarts has really been pushing bluray lately. There were a few 8,10 and combo blus. I even picked up close encounters for $15.
