Default Has ANYBODY seen Colin Firth's performance in A Single Man?

As far as public opinion goes, I am appalled that Colin Firth is getting little to no credit as an Oscar favorite. His name scrapes the bottom of every best actor public poll I've seen so far. Having seen most of the Oscar-worthy performances (with the exception of Morgan Freeman), I still think his performance was the best of 2009. Jeff Bridges put on an incredible show of talent in Crazy Heart, but all-in-all, Firth was the best actor of the year. It's so obvious to me that I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Default Totally agree!

I saw A Single Man for the first time at the Toronto Film Festival in September and several times since then. Colin Firth was mesmerizing - it's far and away the best performance by an actor in 2009.

Interesting analysis of why Jeff Bridges will win in this New York Magazine piece:

I don't buy into those analyses that piece apart each nominee and zoom in on it like it's some huge conspiracy. That's over-complicating things if you ask me.

But then again, it still is unbelievable to me that I'm the outlier in thinking Firth gave the most brilliant performance of 2009. As said in the thread title, I am making a big assumption that not many people have seen A Single Man...

A Single Man is one of my top 3 films of last year I'm most looking forward to seeing. I have high hopes for it.

Part of the confusion stems from A Serious Man getting a lot of attention. To be honest, I have little desire to see that film because the Coen's are very overrated imo.

Try to watch it before the Oscars to match it up with the rest of the nominees. I went in with high hopes and it still blew me out of the water. It's a subtle and "mesmerizing" performance (as the previous poster said).

As for A Serious Man, I blind-bought it but still haven't seen it (stuck with a broken blu-ray laser). I am a Coen bros. fan though.

I've been asking this same question for months! Colin Firth had the best performance of 2009. I like DjMethod, was still surprised by it even though it was one of my most sought films of the year.

Glad to see you liked it DjMethod.

I still think Rockwell is the most deserving. Though I still need to see this and Crazy Heart.

Firth won the London Critics' Circle award yesterday. The BAFTAs are this coming Sunday - it will be interesting to see if he wins on home soil.

He won British Actor of the Year, not Actor of the Year (which went to Christoph Waltz). But at least it's something though.

I think he did a great job. I think the reason that his performance hasnt drawn a lot of attention is because its brilliance is how subtle it is. The character is so calm and controlled. The opposite of Daniel Day Lewis' character in There Will be Blood. There is no FLASH in the character. That doesnt mean he wasnt excellent though.

Sidenote: I thought Julianne Moore gave an outstanding performance as well.

Good movie.

Yes, if anybody is deserving of all this award season buzz, it's Sam Rockwell, and he got nothing, it's really sad.

I also still haven't seen A Single Man or Crazy Heart, but have seen almost all the other award season films. I'm dying to see both.

Finally saw this. Amazing movie. BUT...It's a beautifully acted and filmed movie with little substance.

The performances, the look, and the shots all blew me away. It's one of the best filmed movies I've seen that doesn't say much.
