Default Which flick for a "date night" this weekend (2/20) - Shutter Island?

The wife and I have a babysitter for this weekend so we want to catch a flick. She's easily spooked and doesn't prefer scary movies, which Shutter Island seems to be: a thriller with a scary theme, going by the trailer. Maybe ghosts involved, or crazy inmates.. or both.. who knows.

There's not much of a selection and she's not into horror flicks at all (me neither anymore).

There doesn't seem to be much else. So is Shutter Island the best bet? I'm looking forward to seeing it. I like Decaprio. This seems like an interesting movie. Hopefully it's good.

I would def check it out. I mean it is a Scorsese film with DiCaprio I'm sure it will be good!

The Ghost Writer has been getting very good reviews, although the release appears to be very limited given the director's current situation.

Definitely check out Shutter Island...there's also Wolfman which I haven't seen, but I'd bet money the former is much better than the latter

I've read the book and won't give anything away, obviously. However, I think it's far from a date movie.

I would agree. Shutter Island looks to be a creepy, suspenfull movie. The Wolfman is too gory for a date movie.

Hahaha and here I thought I was entering a topic to warn people not to see Valentines Day or When In Rome (the former being more entertaining, FYI). Shutter Island, Edge of Darkness, or even Avatar are my choices to balance out the aforementioned chick flicks I saw this month.

How about Celine: Through the Eyes of the World?

Just kidding. Have you guys seen all the Oscar nominees? If not, this might be a good time to see Crazy Heart or some other movie you've missed. Personally, Shutter Island isn't doing anything for me. It looks like just another run of the mill thriller.

Well it's down to Shutter Island or Wolfman.

Let's see....

Scorsese over Joe Johnston (Who!? lol.. ok, after a quick Wikipedia, I found out JJ only directed 2 "good" movies: Honey I shrunk the Kids and Jumanji.)

As far as actors go....

Benicio del Toro (Wolfman) wins over leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island) as far as the wife and I are concerned.
Anthony Hopkins (Wolfman) over Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island).

Then there's the whole Wolfman/werewolf monster/fantasy theme, cool special effects.. against what looks like a ghost story/thiller set in alcatraz.

Gonna be a tough call.. I dunno.. I'm leaning Wolfman... I've always had a fascination for werewolves and del Toro can make a movie so much better. Love almost every role he plays. DiCaprio.. while I like him.. he's not someone I'd go to see no matter what movie he's in. Whereas with del Toro I will. (LOL, i think i just made up my mind)

I need to make aware that Benicio del Toro is completly miscast in the film.

Reviews aren't the final word on a movie, but it's probably worth noting Wolfman's Rotten Tomatoes rating is at 32%. I've disagreed with some of the borderline ratings but that one's pretty low.

Sin City

over DiCaprio's

Gangs of New York
The Departed

Not me. They are both good actors but Leonardo is better than Benicio in my eyes. Got Em!!

Haha. I havnt seen either but I would think Shutter Island will be better as u cant go wrong with a Scorcese film starring Leonardo. Despite the mixed reviews I would like to think Wolfman is very good as well. I will day 1 blind buy both if I dont see either in the theater. But Leonardo may be a top 5 actor currently speaking. Got Em!!

Honestly, I don't think are rules for a date movie. You two are a loving couple and you should both go see a good movie that you enjoy. Not some cheap romantic comedy that you'll hate. I'm pretty sure you two are both intellectual people so go and enjoy Scorsese. First good movie in February in YEARS
