Animal Experts: Who would win in a fight: Lion or Tiger?

Please settle my childhood argument with my best friend. I'm 25 now, and this is something my best friend and I always debated back in the olden glory days:

Who would win in a fight, a Tiger or a Lion?

He states the fact that Tigers actually weigh more than Lions.

That's all I know so far.

Enlighten us.

And yes- before anyone posts a picture of a Liger- I am well aware that the Liger is king above all.

Depends on the sex of the combatants, really. Tiger would probably win, I don't think lions are quite as aggressive and I believe they really only attack in groups.

Two sides of the argument here, Tiger Vs. Male lion and Tiger Vs. Female lion. Here is why:

First Scenario:

TIGER VS. MALE LION

Winner in a fight would be the Tiger here is why: Male Lions in general are lazy, don't hunt and sure they could fight but they don't finish the fight.

It is a well-known fact that tigers are the biggest cats in the world. Not only this, but tigers are noticeably more muscular, and better fighters. It is actually a myth that lions are better fighters than tigers, because tigers compete with each other for territory just as much as lions fight for a pride. Tigers also have experience fighting with many animals; Bengal tigers can easily kill large crocodiles and black bears, and Siberian tigers have been known to attack and kill huge adult brown bears. Tigers have been noticed as better fighters because they are more swift, agile, fierce, and have better eye-coordination. They have a stronger jaw force and paw-swipe. However, it is not true that tigers have longer fangs than lions. The skulls of these two cats have been compared, and usually their canines are about the same.

Scenario 2:

Tiger Vs. Lioness

It would be a tie. The lionesses are the hunters, they hunt the animal and share it with their Cubs and of course the King as well. They are more aggressive and vicious when it comes to their territory. They would be unbelievably and equal or even a fearsome opponent to the tigers.

The YouTube "fights" that appear to show a lion winning, are not what they appear. In one, a tigress has a male lion in a death grip before the animals are broken up by a high pressure hose. Another, the "Gir Forest" fight, was a complete sham. In it, a lion appears to kill a smallish tiger or tigress, but in the extended version of this video, the tiger gets up and yawns and strolls away. This fight was supposed to be in the wild, but could not have happened because the Gir forest is over 100 miles from tiger country. One can find about anything on that site, and there are many videos of tigers defeating lions. If both animals are of the same age, and weight, the tiger will win nearly every time. Tigers are superior fighters, the myth that tigers just hunt and lions fight just isn't so. A male lion may have to defend his turf maybe ten times over the course of a lifetime, but male tigers fight over turf and mates every year. With two or more males in a lion pride, their fight ratio goes down even more. When I was working with these cats, three times had we fights between them, and the tiger was winning in two, in the other, an adult male lion was chasing a two year old tiger around before we got them apart .

Its a Tigress Vs. Lion and she had him on a choke hold for sometime. If it were a male the outcome would have been different.

So, you're saying that male tigers are much more fierce than female tigers? That would explain that video. Granted, that was a male Lion in the video, which so far, is the worst of the gender for fighting, and he still won. I guess it depends on how much worse female tigers are compared to male tigers.

Animals typically always go for the neck. It would seem that a Lion would have the advantage here due to the thick mane. I bet it would be very hard to get to the throat with dealing with that. Maybe not.

No I am saying Tigresses are powerful and not to be underestimated. Based on the video you posted the Tigress had the Lion in a pickle for a while. We all know in the Animal Kingdoms usually the females are the aggressive ones but that doesn't apply to all animals. Now what I am saying if that was a Tiger Vs. the Lion then it would have been done for the lion. The Tigers are larger and hunt larger or similar size animals.

In the wild, tigers mostly feed on larger and medium sized animals.

Although male Lions tend to be lazy, while the females hunt. They actually have to spend there time fighting other male Lions in order to have control over the females, so I say Lion.

I would put my money on the Tiger vs the Male Lion. Just based on their sizes and hunting experiences, even though the male lions do have to defend their territory.
