Default Stuck In A Little Situation Right Now.

So I own a PS3 and have about 80 blurays and only like 4 games. I dont play games at all very much. But I went to watch my copy of Oceans 11 tonight and nothing came up on the PS3 menu. I figured out that no matter what disc i put in (game or Blu) nothing comes up. My PS3 is shot, $150 to fix. I have the old 60gb model. Now my question is what should I do!? haha. Should I send it in, even though its 3 years old and something else could go bad on it? Buy new PS3 Slim? Or just buy a new good quality blu ray player? And also remember I am a broke college student so I dont plan on spending a lot of money on this haha. Thanks guys.

I don't know where you are located. But I just used this company. Turn around was about a week and half.

This person on Ebay is able to repair your PS3 for a cost and will refund you if he cannot repair it.

Just buy a new one honestly. Unless you play the old PS2 games not much reason not to if you can afford it.

This may have nothing to do with your issue at all but some PS3's are having an issue right now.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/...etwork-status/

It talks about network issues but I've read elsewhere of file corruption due to this bug. May be worth hanging tight for a little while or replace it if you're having that burning itch.

Yeah this seems like it could be a good idea. Maybe I'll get ahold of him, I'm pretty sure my laser has gone bad. And I'm located in Iowa so it is pretty close. What was wrong with yours? Did he do a good job? and how much? Thanks.

That issue was mainly with the 60 GB PS3's. BUT, this issue did not affect BD or DVD playback at all. It was strictly a PSN error which affected lots of games, but not movie playback. The issue was resolved as of last night.

I had the YLOD problem. When I powered on my PS3 it powered off right away. I don't know what was wrong or what they did to fix it. It just works now. And seems a bit faster. The price I paid was $65 + $15 to ship to + $15 to ship from & a 90 day warranty. Sony wanted $193 and no warranty.

While failures of the PS3's optical drive have been common, there are other potential software/firmware related causes for your problem that you should eliminate before sending you PS3 in for repairs. Have you tried:

1. a hard reset of your PS3 by removing power (either unplug the power cord or turn off using the master power switch on the back of the PS3) for 30 seconds then applying power again?

2. installing the latest Firmware update (if you haven't already done so) -or- if you have previously installed the latest firmware, then re-install it using the PS3's built-in, but unknown to many PS3 users, recovery tools? Below is an excerpt from the PS3 FAQ over on the AVS Forum on getting to the recovery tools menu of the PS3 (see the bottom of the PS3 FAQ post for more info on firmware updates):

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH YOUR PS3 FIRMWARE UPDATE, there were several new PS3 recovery tools added starting with firmware version 2.5x. A new recovery menu gives users access to several restore tools. Among the recovery tools it provides is the ability to re-install a new firmware update, in the event there is an failure/error during the firmware installation process. However, to re-install the firmware you will need to download the firmware on your PC and transfer it a USB flash memory drive as per the instructions provided above. To access the recovery menu (the following info from boardsus.playstation.com),
1. Turn off Playstation 3
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press your finger on the power button until you hear 2 consecutive beeps.
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take your finger off the power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then press the PS button on the controller
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Hey,

If I have trouble with my 60GB PS3, then I'll send to back to Sony for an exchange for $150.

You won't find a better player for $150 if you ask me. Actually, I think the PS3 is the best player bar none but anyone who likes their stand alone player will argue against that.

I wouldn't trust any repair places other than Sony directly. There is a "fix" involving reflow of the solder of the GPU and it typically doesn't last long. You will see comments from most people who do it or have it done saying they are doing it for the 4th or 5th time.

My 60GB failed after close to 3 years but I had extended warranty so I got an exchange from Sony for free. Next time when it eventually fails again I'll go for the $150 exchange if they still offer it by then.

If they don't... maybe I'll save up for a Oppo since I have a SACD and the Oppo is a nice player that also plays SACD.
