Default Criticism of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Review.

I'm afraid to say that the reviewer of this one:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-G...y-Review/4355/
Has given a very inaccurate review!

"Given the source material, the transfer is as sharp as it could be, with the stubble on leathery faces rendered clearly and textures, like cloth, showing fine detail"
"I should note though, that in several of the close-ups, the actors seem to step a bit too close to the lens and the focus becomes uncharacteristically soft."

"There's a thin, almost unnoticeable layer of grain on the image, so thin, actually, that I have to wonder if the restorers used any DNR techniques. And if so, they did an amazing job, because the film exhibits no evidence of DNR's usual blurring and smearing."

I just got my copy yesterday, excited to finally have it in my possesion I popped it in my PS3 witness the marvelous transfer, not to watch but to confirm how good it actually looks.
I was shocked to say the least, I sat about 3 feet of my tv and the very first thing I noticed, WAS DNR.
I told myself that this could not be true, so I continued to fastforward to other scenes, {And I'm not exaggerating!} One shot looked like a moving Monét painting, seriously!
[Show spoiler]

I don't know if the reviewer decided to ignore the "in your face" DNR and decided to lie a little or if the reviewer didn't do a very good and thourough review.

This review made the decision for me to order it, I trusts the reviews here and they're usually truthful and right on the money.
I'm very dissapointed, if the review was more truthful I would have never ordered it and it would've saved me $11.99.
I hereby implore the owners of this site to please revise the review of this release and give a more accurate review of what this disc represents.
Thank you. - Qillaq

Wow, that shot is pretty bad! Was it just this particular scene that was this bad or were there others?

I just fast forwarded to a couple of scenes, I don't know if there are any more scenes just as bad, but I can tell DNR pretty much all the time, just not as much as that scene I was talking about.

DNR is not subjective, there is DNR applied to it, what can be subjective is wether you like

the DNR or not.

Thats a fact however reviews are one persons opinion/view. Thats why they are subjective.

But how is it that the reviewer says there's "no evidence of DNR's usual blurring and smearing."
When I could clearly see it on my 42 inch tv?
Reviews should be objective and thourough in order for us to make an informed decision.
I honestly cannot see how the reviewer could miss the classic tell tales of applied DNR.

Example of a objective review is Gladiator, a very good one in which I decided not to buy.

I am not arguing any point of his review. Please contact Casey and ask him what movie he was watching I have not seen the film in high def so I cannot comment. I am just stating every review is more/less an opinion and of course we can have different opinions

Thank you for the help, but I thought blu-ray.com would have a higher standard and if I'm just directed to contact the reviewer myself, nothing would be done.
This could compromise the integrity of this otherwise great site, I'm afraid I would lose my trust to this site's reviews if this doesn't get redeemed.
I know that it sounds like I'm "crying wolf" but this is in my opinion in the best interest of this site.

Are all my efforts futile?

Q, if you have a problem with a review, where else is the best place to start than the source? You would be able to hear the reviewer's thoughts on the matter and state yours as well, no one is shunning your opinion We are trying to give you a direct way to try and resolve your issue.

Q I think that you are your own judge, in terms of your your opinions. Hence the reason I don't believe and trust any reviewer's claims (nothing personal here) until I judge it for myself. Its a matter of differences between you and the reviewer (in terms of what comes to your likings).

Same reason I decide for myself what movies to watch even if they were hammered by critics.

But Shad, wether DNR is applied is not a matter of subjective opinion, there is DNR applied.

Wether you like DNR or not is a matter of subjective opinion.
and I love the movie, I'm not critising the review of the movie itself, I'm saying that the reviewer did not see the digital manipulation of the movie.

Personally, DNR applied to the movie or not doesn't bother me at all. You are right that something should have been mentioned at least, because then the review would have been more accurate in a sense. The right thing to do would be mentioning DNR Applied in the transfer or not just to avoid such a reaction.

On that I agree with your point.

I've corrected more than my share of reviews when a reader has noticed something I didn't. I skewered a transfer for being soft and slathered in DNR; turns out it was the way the film was shot. I issued a quick apology, changed the review, and everyone was satisfied. I know Casey and others here have made very similar corrections, and that's why you can trust the integrity of the site -- not because we're always 100% right, but because we aren't above admitting a mistake and making a humble correction.

We rely on readers like yourself to keep us all on our toes. Don't be so quick to assume we would simply ignore you if you contacted us

But it's important to avoid hurling accusations from the outset. Writing, "I don't know if the reviewer decided to ignore the "in your face" DNR and decided to lie a little or if the reviewer didn't do a very good and thorough review" suggests there are only two possibilities, both of them negative. Have a little faith in us; we have plenty of faith in you guys.

Thanks as always for posting! I think you'll be surprised how Casey (and other reviewers here) handle such feedback. Just keep it kind. Oh, and you also probably shouldn't expect an insta-response. We're not always at our computers when you guys are

First of all, thank you.
And I apologize for my assumptions, turns out that I'm too pessimistic, I stand corrected.
About the two negative possibilities I should've thought that through I can see that, and I'm sorry for my harsh critisism and throwing accusations around, believe it or not I tried to be friendly, but you did cost me 12 dollars
Bad jokes aside I am impressed by the positive response you given and I'll be more patient in the future of course, now I know what to do in the future
if I ever should "find" something wrong.

Now I hope that the review will now be revised, costumers should be able to make an informed decision, I know we're few and rare but I would hate it if other DNR haters bought this because of a review that unfortunately did not represent what the transfer really is.
Matter resolved, big kudos for correction and for a friendly atmosphere.

No problem. Although I think you may have misread my post and thought I was Casey

I'm sure he'll address your concerns once he's online. He's a good guy. I just spotted the thread and thought I'd interject my two cents. Have a good one!

I think it's a pretty lousy disc, and disagree with the staff reviews quite often, but that's what the 1080p screen caps are there for.

If you doubt that detail was lost to DNR here are some comparisons to the Italian release:
