Default The Kids Are Alright - The Who - March 9

I don't see any threads on the forum nor any review of this BD title as of yet.

I've got the DVD and planned on getting the BD version. As it's coming out this coming Tuesday, I wanted to order it from Amazon.

Does ANYONE know of any reviews out there that give us an idea of the quality of the PQ and AQ?

THANKS!

A Google Search only brings up where to buy, but NO reviews anywhere...

Man, I am tempted to order this one for purely nostalgic reasons, but really I saw it so many times back in the day, and now I prefer the concert discs like Isle of Wight and Kilburn '77.

For the benefit of anyone who is on the fence and hasn't seen it though - one day when I was a college freshman I woke up not a fan of the Who, but some friends talked me into going to see The Kids Are Alright with them. After that, I listened to nothing but Who albums for a solid month. Yeah, it's good - really captures the spirit of the band.

I got it today the DTS-HD MA is cool for say "Baba O' Riley" and "Who Are You" and "Won't get Fooled Again" most of the early footage from tv shows look no better than the dvd film stock from woodstock fair better there are no extras unless you call a commentary track a bonus I don't, all the cool stuff from the second dvd are all missing so if your double dipping save the second dvd from the delux set which has the same style label as the BD so they look good together. so if your a die hard fan like me and you want Keith Moon's last concert appearance in the best quality possible get it, if a casual fan rent it. It also has a PCM stereo track.

Same here Mike!

As much as it is a slight disappointment about the minimal improvement in mostly PQ and AQ...this is a GREAT film about the Who and I would have bought this on BD either way.

Thanks to Alan A for the heads up...at least we know, what we are getting in to...

I set a price tracker for $ 16.99 ( it's lowest price ever per graph ), since I just spent nearly $ 200, catching me up for the REST of March ( less The Italian Job which ain't ready yet ? ), and...you guys confirming that my 2 disc SE DVD is STILL a prized possession...I can wait.

Helluva restoration job when even Hi Def can't make a dent huh ???

Hey...guys...dreaming is free...how about an Audio only DTS HD Master 7.1 of Who's Next huh ?

I love my SACD copy of Tommy, wish Pete would go back and finish 5.1 mix of Quadrophenia

If you do vinyl, then try find a first pressing of Tommy on the Decca label, the sonics are incredible!

Same here Alan! I have "Tommy" on DVD-A and it's great having it as a 5.1 mix.

I'm really surprised that Pete hasn't opted to realease Quadrophenia on BD-A. I think that it would benefit the most from a 5.1 remix...hey...Neil Young went that route.

I hope the Beatles go this route in the future as well!

"The Kids Are Alright" BD is worth it to me alone for the Rock and Roll Circus performance of "A Quick One"!

I never shoulda took us down this road...they're gonna move this thread to the Audio section if we're not careful, but...

I've got the TOMMY SACD too, and...have bought the ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS twice...first on VHS in '96, then the DVD a few years back.

Couple of things noticed on the new BD of The Kids Are Alright.

- overall the BD is a significant upgrade in both audio and video (the professionaly shot recordings of Baba O'Riley, Who Are you and Won't Get Fooled Again benefitting the most). Audio is outstanding in DTS HD.

- the color scheme on the BD is much cooler than the SE dvd. Reds are toned down significantly, and cool blue is more prevalent on the BD. This makes for nicer viewing of the concert sequences.

-contrast seems better but also slightly boosted on the BD. Some of the black and white stuff has a tendency to bloom more than on the dvd because of this. Shadow detail on the bd is far better than on the dvd (which had a lot of crushed blacks, for instance the Woodstock segment)

- The BIGGIE: the Rock 'n Roll Circus segment of A Quick one is restored to it's original format, with the light bulbs around the frame and the correct aspect ratio. The SE dvd had this performance zoomed in horribly, totally destroying the overall view of the performance and giving it a horrible blurry quality. So somebody has gone back to the original HD master for this release, otherwise it would have been a straight port of the dvd master.

The framing and cropping on the blu-ray appears to be possibly closer to the original theatrical version. Take a look at the Smothers Bros. clip at the beginning when Tommy Smothers is talking to Roger, it's cropped closer to the top of his head, while the DVD has significantly more headroom in that shot. If you watch the restoration doc on the DVD, some guy on there says they played around with the cropping to make the framing look "better" on TV rather than just hard matting it the way it would've been in the theater. Just from doing a few checks here and there (haven't watched the whole movie yet) I'm guessing this blu-ray restores the original cropping.

On a sidenote, my copy appears to NOT be time-coded? Anyone else's?
