Another none story that as been blown way out of proportion by the news media. We have real problem in our society, health care, the economy, guns, violence, wars....yet Fox, CNN, NBC, ABC all of the other news rooms who dare call themselves reporters in the same category as Walter Cronkite prefer gives hours upon hours of crap news of this type. They have to actualy otherwise they would have to earn their paycheck if they had to go and cover the real news

I honestly believe the matter is blown out of proportion. The kid was supervised and the pilot didn't seem to mind it because he was notified about it.

I do have to agree, the news seems to be more like busisness out there to make money. One example, lots of children get kidnapped or lost and only a select few ever make the news, usually ones from ealthy families. If something happened to one of my nephews (who I have custody of at the moment), they would'nt even give it the time of day, since my family is "working class".

So if the kid had put an arriving flight and a departing flight on the same runway and nobody caught the mistake untill it was to late would it still be "Blown out of proportion". Supervised or not the controler had no right to put other peoples lives in danger because he thought it was cute to put his child in control of departing flights. IMO

All the kid did was repeat something his Father told him two seconds earlier. He was not actually doing the job. People need to relax. I can't believe people get so upset about a kid saying a sentence. No one was ever in any danger, al lhe said was clear for takeoff to a plane that was undoubtedly sitting at the end of the runway simply waiting for the plane in front of it to clear. THis is not a big deal at all, simply another example of the media sensationalizing something stupid and in the process ruining the lives of an entire family for something so trivial.

The dad violated federal rules, twice(two kids), and was suspended. But the news blew this out of proportion? Just because "nothing happened" doesn't mean nothing was wrong with the situation. During the time the kid was in the tower, who was watching them? Who was doing their job while they were? This is one job where one second can mean the difference between a plane landing safely and 300 people dieing. And as far as a pilots judgment, I remember a pilot recently overflying an airport by a couple hundred miles while the cockpit crew played on a computer.

If the kid had been generating commands and not simply repeating them it is one thing, but he was not. He regurgitated a command given to him by his father. It's not like the father told his kid to take over while he goes and gets some lunch.

The bottom line is pilots and ATC's alike see NOTHING wrong with what happened. I am neither of those things but I prefer to believe people who know what they are talking about as opposed to those who have no clue about the inner workings of flying and ATC and enjoy being outraged at everything the media decides to tell them.

Bottom line is the man was suspended, so someone had a problem with what he did. Since we're talking bottom lines.

In my opinion, cops, elevator repairmen, brain surgeons, and flight controllers need to leave their kids at home. Having them actually attempt to do the job is completely insane.

When I first heard this story last week, my initial reaction was that it was being blown way out of proportion, and it wasn't that big of a deal. The more I thought about it, the more I realize this was one GIANT act of stupidity both by the controller and his supervisor, they both deserve disciplinary action. An airport control tower is the LAST place there should be any type "goofing around", even if it was "supervised".

Ric I thought that according to the Supervisor he wasn't aware of this happening. But the father managed to get his kid in and notified pilots that his kid would be directing a flight or two for take off.

I think the action is being blown out because thankfully nothing bad did (True something could have happened) take place. However, its already been done and for the future it shouldn't be allowed again.

Count me on the side of thinking this wasn't a big deal. Everyone saying "what if blah blah happened"... well then maybe we shouldn't all drive to work tomorrow, because we might crash. Or the world might blow up. What ifs are irrelevant if the odds of them happening are close to 0. The kid was just repeating lines his dad told him. An air traffic controller's hardest task is managing flights that are in the air, landings are less difficult, and clearing planes for takeoff is by far the easiest.

What kind of danger could anyone really be in?

Kid: You're clear for take-off.
Pilot: But there's a giant plane in front of me.
Kid: Who cares. Clear for take-off. Go.
Pilot: Ok, here goes!

And then a plane smashes into another plane.

Pilots aren't stupid. Some of the stuff with ATC is just stupid procedural stuff, and isn't as serious as some people seem to think it is. Just listen to the pilots reactions in the video. Yet some people think pilots are morons who follow anything they are told, and that every word out of an ATC's mouth is a matter of life and death.
