Default Planning a trip to Niagara Falls soon....anything we just HAVE to see or do?

The wife and I are planning a trip to see the Falls (U.S. side) here at the end of the month-has anyone been and what MUST we see and or do while we are there-besides the Falls?

Thanks.

I went to undergrad at the University at Buffalo. I can assure you that Niagara Falls is cooler than you might think--it's pretty amazing. A MUST is going on the Maid of the Mist. My brother's ex girlfriend's family owned it. Basically, it takes you on a boat near a waterfall and you get soaked. The Office used it as a scene for the wedding of Jim.

Drive through Canada to get there. Driving through Ohio and Pennsylvania isn't very interesting.

Living nearby I've been many times, pretty much whenever I have out-of-town visitors.

Both sides of the falls are worth going to.

On the U.S. side the view of the actual falls are not as good as on the Canadian side, but the area itself is much more enjoyable with a nice park to stroll through. There's also the overhang that you can go out on to get a decent view from up high.

The view of the falls on the Canadian side are much better and you can take a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist to go right up to the falls. The surrounding area is very touristy, with lots of souvenir shops, tourist attractions (Ripley's Believe it or Not, Madame Tussauds Wax museum, a haunted house, etc.) and a casino.

My recco would be to spend the daytime on the U.S. side, enjoying nature and the views, maybe have a picnic in the park. Then in the afternoon/evening, head across to the Canadian side. View the falls from that side and then have some dinner and maybe a visit to the casino or one of the attractions.

Once it gets dark, be sure to head back down to the water as they light up the falls at night and it's a very different experience than during the day.

Clifton Hill and Skylon Tower on the Canadian side.
Not much on the American side. Niagara Falls Observation Tower, Maid of the Mist is at the bottom but I don't think it is running.

My advice is stay on the Canadian side or at a minimum take a day on that side, it's like night and day compared to Buffalo. Casinos, great restaurants and plenty of shopping and just all around more to do imo.

You must go to the canadian side and go behind the falls. you go down in an elevator and come out at the base of the horseshoe falls it is very cool and very close. there is also a tunnel that goes behind the falls. they have a place you can stop and look down another short tunnel and see the water coming down. it is worth the trip to see it.

My wife and I have our passports current and up-to-date. Is this all we are going to have to have on us (besides our Drivers License/I.D.) to go between the US and Canada? We are leaning towards staying on the Canadian side.

Yeah, passports are all you need. Technically you don't need your driver's license to cross the border, but I imagine you'll be driving so obviously you'll want them anyway.
