Default PS3 has its own "death message"... three beeps

OK, my PS3 has just died. When powered on, the light flashes green once, then beeps three times and continuously flashes red. If turned off, it just repeats itself. The remotes do not respond. From what I have read, this is a thermal issue but I keep my PS3 on an open shelf. Anyone else experienced this problem? From what i can see from Google, this error is terminal.

Bad Karma.... my Denon DVD-3930CI also died. The HDMI output failed five days after purchase.

Have you tried completely unplugging it or flipping the power switch in the back? I've gotten the 3 beeps before, it's not just for that. It's also when the system freezes up if you accidently eject something while the system is using it, or when you try to eject something and there's nothing in there.

I'd call Sony customer service before you assume your PS3 is dead. They can walk you through some checks.

Physically turn the unit off with the switch in the back, then turn it back on. It should work.

I haven't heard about this problem. But it does sound like you have a power problem. Do you have a UPS or some kind of power conditioner on your electronics or at least a surge protector? If anything else dies unplug everything and go buy a UPS or Power Conditioner that way you know its not a electircal problem.

I always get the replacement plan from Best Buy on my consoles. The PS3 one was kinda expensive (100 bucks) but if I have a problem I can walk in and get a new console on the spot. I know people who waited on Sony to repair their console, and I'm not into waiting that long. Plus, if the console dies within the manufacturer's warranty, I still keep my replacement plan.

I tried rebooting, resetting and unplugging the AC cord, no dice. The unit does not even recognize the two remotes I have.

I called Sony (SCEA) and explained my problem, they immediately said they will send me some shipping material to return the PS3 to their Laredo, Texas repair center. Inquired if this is a common issue, especially since there was no hesitation about returning the unit, i got a definite vague answer. i.e. there seems to be a problem with some units and they are not telling us. I did notice that after upgrading the unit to firmware 1.90, the fans did not run as loud. The question is, did the firmware alter the thermal characteristics of the fan, and if so, enough to make the PS3 more susceptible to failure? I also see on youtube postings about the three beeps so i am not the only one having this problem. There are also others on the PS forum having the same issue. Looks like the X-Box 360 may not be the only unit with a design issue.

A little off topic, but what's the best way to back up your saved data, mostly game saves, in the event a replacement console is needed? I just had to do this for my 360 and it was a bit of a hassle.

Flash drive. Of course back it up before your console needs to be replaced.

Sony always sends a complete new console.

If they repair the console, it costs Sony more then if they just send a new console. Well, at least in Europe.

I know this, because I called Sony in case my PS3 would brake. I had a HDMI problem at the time, but it was my own fault. All I had to do was turn my tv off and then on again.

So you will get a new console, update your PS3 hardware if you can.

They don't always do...mine just recently died and they sent me a refurbed unit with only a 90 day warranty... I figured since my 1 year warranty was ending Nov. , they were not going to give me another new unit with another year warranty....

So maybe those extended warranties maybe worth it...

I buy all my electronics with my platinum Mastercard and then pay them off immediately. The card automatically doubles the manufacturers warranty.

Edit: EXCEPT for my TV. Damn Costco only takes Debit Cards or Amex and I'm not getting an Amex.
