Criterion Hunger (2008)

I am wondering if Hunger is a good movie to blind buy?

i dont see any films in your collection that are similar. its a criterion film, which some love (me) and others dont. cinematography is emphasized, with sometimes long scenes with little or no action or dialogue. very different than many films in your collection.

i'd suggest a rental first.

Wow Wo. Whats in my collection some of them I got from the store I work at. I dont even have all the movies I own on here. I just got over 65 blurays now. I just put some of the movies up there. If you were to meet me I like comedy but not so much I really enjoy Drama. And I wish Seven Samurai would come out on bluray and city of god.

I bought it. Just because I own some bad movies does not mean I have good taste in movies. I thank you for your comments but I just get some blurays free from where I work.

Not exactly a blind buy then.
Hunger is powerful stuff, not for everyone.

Indeed.
Hopefully you will enjoy it, I found it to be a very emotional experience. The cinematography is astounding, but you must have patience for a film like this.

Movies to me can be disterbing to me. I was 13 when I watched Requiem For A Dream. My parents were upset that I did. But I really did enjoy the movie. I was about 16 when I saw boys dont cry and that was a fantastic movie but it was just emotional the whole time. And I dont really buy movies that are like hunger.

Hunger is a extremely powerful/emotional film about the last days of Bobby Sands. Its very informative about the conditions that the Irish Hunger Strikers had to deal with. If you are interested in the topic and want to see some phenominal acting, then yes it is worth the blind buy. Like someone else said, its not a film for everyone. It can be depressing. Personally I loved it though.

I'm also thinking of getting this as a Blind Buy also.... I've always wanted to watch film, but I never got around to it.
With the new Barnes n' Noble 50% off sale, I have to say I am interested.
Worth it?

I wouldn't recommend it as a blind-buy..... but it's a very good film....

When was the last time you saw a non-mainstream film on Blu-ray, that was part of the Criterion Collection at a Hollywood Video store????? Just curious.

Funny, the director goes by the name of Steve McQueen!

Whoops , I gotten carried away right there. I was somehow thinking of the term of someone hungry for a blind buy.

Yes I have seen Hunger and I found it an effective if solemn portrayal of the Irish republic soldiers. More visual and visceral than story and linear, I found Steve McQueen gave the feeling of participation than the feeling of an observer, smelling the odors that rot and excess, to the cold air and halls. Without the
[Show spoiler]explaination of Bobby Sands with the Priest and his intentions,
this could have been a silent movie. Be prepared this is not easy to stomach some of it's scenes.

I plan on buying Hunger during the B&N sale. I'm a huge fan of Andrei Tarkovsky so "excruciatingly slow" shouldn't bother me at all.

It's available on Netflix Instant Streaming (as are a lot of Criterion titles), so if you've got Neftflix and are interested in the film (which is amazing in my opinion), I'd recommend checking it out that way before a blind buy. As others have already said, it's not for everyone.

Trying to find a UK blu ray of Hunger. Does one exist? It seems crazy that a movie made and set in Northern Ireland doesn't have a blu ray here, or even the Criterion blu ray being region free.
