Default Help me pick out a new 32" HDTV!

Hello all,

Eventually, we plan on replacing the old 21" CRT () that we currently have in the living room. According to my measurements, we should be able to comfortably fit a 32" set. Now comes the difficult part.

I think I've narrowed it down to four TVs: the Vizio SV320XVT, the Samsung LN32B550, the LG 32LH40 and the Sony KDL-32S5100.

I have a 26" Vizio in my room and have been happy with it, so I think I'm leaning towards them the most. I'm a little leery of the Samsung, however, having browsed a little through this forum and seeing topics about Samsung TVs having issues. I know nothing about LG. My brother bought a 40" Sony last week, and it looks pretty nice.

If you feel so inclined, you can even suggest another set either currently out or close to release- I'd like to keep it under the $650 range as I also have to pick out a Blu-ray player as well (which is a whole other topic).

Thanks guys

EDIT: I just had a thought. Will there be any noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p on a 32" screen? Will it effect Blu-ray watching at all? Will HD shows be lacking? Because if not, I could save a considerable amount by going with 720p. What do you think?

Depend on how far away you are sitting. Within 8' you should be able to notice a difference and within 6' you would certainly notice a difference. But, resolution is only part of the image.

Not sure what the space requirement is, but you can get a Panasonic 42G10 and BD60 with "Monster Pack" for $833 with free shipping after coupon code BONUSBUY.

Viewing distance will be relatively close, with people viewing anywhere from 3.8 feet to 9 feet at one time. Our living room is sort of small so the TV is in an odd place in relation to the sofa. Sometimes people will pull up chairs directly in front of the screen if they're playing video games.

Check out this forum on sitting distance from a 720p or 1080i/p source..

https://forum.blu-ray.com/display-th...esolution.html

For 720P HD sources, recommended sitting distance is..

30 inch TV= 6 feet
34 inch TV= 6.7 feet
40 inch TV= 8 feet
50 inch TV= 10 feet

For a 32" I think you can get away with getting a 720p tv. But if you are hung up on the 3 that you listed, I would go with the Samsung..

They have that advertised incorrectly as a plasma. It's a 1080p LCD. At that size, I'd recommend the 720p 32" X1. I bought my son one for Christmas (~$320 after Bing cash-back), and it's an excellent set for the $$.

I thought that seemed odd.

Doesn't the x1 come with an Ipod dock included?

Yep, but videos from the iPod to the set look horrible, as they are sized for the iPod. He does use it, though, simply as a set of external speakers in order to listen to music.

I just spent the past couple of days searching for a 32" LCD t.v. as well. It will be for the bedroom. I looked at both 720p & 1080p tvs. Originally I was ok with 720p, but the more I thought about it, I would rather pay a little more and get something that will have some PQ longevity. Here is what I ended up going with:

Philips 32PFL6704D/F7B 32" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV - Refurbished $399.99
No tax & free shipping.

4HDMI slots.

It even plays DIVX from a USB drive.

I'm not sure if I can actually put the URL to the site, but I ended up getting it from BuyDOTcom.

I bought an extended warranty which covers refurbished (2 yrs) for a little more.

My buddy bought the same one a little over a month ago and is very happy.

I hope this helps in your decision!

Hey there, I was wondering if you could tell me the settings on your 26'' Vizio? and the model number and how long you've had it? If it doesn't inconvenience you that is. I have a 26'' Vizo VA26L and I'm interested in comparing settings. Much appreciated.

Sorry I couldn't offer you any advise on your next purchase.

Me? I still haven't decided yet... I think this is the most complicated purchase decision I've ever had to make. I was originally going to go with the Vizio, since I have a smaller set from them and it works great, but I'm reading about all these issues with their recent sets and a class-action lawsuit is being launched against them. Plus, it doesn't have as many ports as the other sets do. I'm a little weary now.

Honestly, I think it's still on factory settings from the day I brought it home 2 years ago. It's the VW26L. I do plan on calibrating it myself one of these days, as soon as I pick up a calibration disc.

I would go with the Sony 32S5100. Good tv at a very reasonable price. Getting one for my dad this summer.

Right now, it seems the Vizio is the only TV of the five I was looking at that is available directly from Amazon (and in my budget). Every other TV would have to come from the Marketplace, and the asking prices for any one of those TVs plus $30 in shipping plus $50 in tax= over my budget!
