25GB blu-ray vs 50GB blu-ray

can someone please tell why why new releases are in 50GB discs???!! and what are the differences?
so is the quality way better?

Twice as much space on the BD50s means that movies' video and audio don't need to be compressed as much, and will therefore have better PQ and AQ. It also means that there's more room for any extras.

In general, the 50 GB disks contain a high bitrate video encode in either AVC or MPEG2 and either Uncompressed PCM or Dolby True HD or DTS HD along with standard Dolby 5.1 in one or more languages.


The higher bitrate should bring with it a picture virtually free of compression artifacts.

It's also harder to backup, 50 gig blank disks are not cheap to come by as compared to 25 gig ones.

How can you tell which they are?

On the bottom of the disc you can see 2 sets of barcodes on 50gb discs, and also there's the text "BVDL" and then for single layered "BVSS". Unfortunately there's no markings on the packaging... except for the Buena Vista first releases that say "Dual Layered disc. Layer transition may trigger a slight pause." Of course that's not true due to the buffers in Blu-Ray players, which is kind of funny to me...

There's a bitrate thread around here someplace. Most Blus tend to be about 30-35 GB from a cursory glace last time I looked

Just like most DVDs only use between 5 and 6GB, regardless of extras.

PQ and AQ is a factor of many things, also don't forget notr all movies are the same length, a 1.5h movie does not need as much as a 4h movie. But if a movie (with it's extras) could fit on a BD25 the studio would not have used the more expensive BD50. So you should assume that the content on a BD 50 >25 and so it would be used (but maybe not completely)
