Heavenly Sword demo + Sixaxis

So I have been playing the demo some trying to get familiar with the controls and so far so good. The one thing I can not seem to do is the aerial moves. Maybe I am doing something wrong. The controls say to hold L1 and Triangle to launch someone into the air. Ok this is no problem. Then it says while they are in the air to quickly move your controller upwards and Nariko will jump into the air to do an aerial attack and from there you can do more combos.

I can not get her to jump in the air with the opponent. I am moving the controller up while the opponent is in the air. The first page of the controls is kind of vague but it sounds like you have to hold down X for aftertouch. Does that mean you have to hold down X while moving your controller up? I tried this as well with no success. So has anyone gotten good at this? What am I doing wrong any tips? I am using my standard PS3 controller which should support this feature I use it in other games.
