Red face Okay, okay, I was hasty about Blu-ray sucking....

The first time I played a DVD on my nearly 15 year old 13" Panasonic (at the time) through the coax, I couldn't believe it was the same tv because it looked so great. Now that I compared Monster House DVD to blu-ray, regular DVD looks like VHS!

Test beds:
Monster House DVD on 3:4 13" TV via coax @ 480i - to
Monster House DVD on 16:9 34" HD-TV via component @ 1080i -
Monster House blu-ray on 16:9 34" HD-TV via component @ 1080i -

I am a "blu-blood" snob now. I still do not like most of the titles, though.

I have the HDMI cable standing by, but my current hd-tv doesn't support it. I am considering a new TV for Christmas. Perhaps once I see a non-animation in blu-ray my opinion will change even more.

I watch it, and I am still not sure I was watching HD, or just the somewhat improved version of the regular dvd, which I also have.

My question is, is it me, or is Sony playing this game with us to see if we notice if the movies we buy are high def or not. If not, why am I paying 50 to 100 percent more for a movie which is no better than regular DVD on my High Def TV? Can you say, "Class Action Law Suit"?

So you played the MH BD and thought it was fake HD. Then after comparing the BD to the DVD you could see the difference.

Whatever the case welcome to the club.

It was that whole remastered "The Fifth Element" thing that made me suspicious. Probably got a little paranoid.

Does your current TV support DVI?

also, you wrote in your earlier post about how to tell if the Fifth Element was the remastered? well, not too sure...but Amazon has it listed as... The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray] (1997)

...and it got quite an improved review too!

If you haven't noticed yet, I am removing the same reference from every post. If that wasn't enough of an indication, let this be: Stop discussing a closed thread. Stay on topic.

I saw the review. I'll get it soon.

My TV does have one DVI, but I need that for my HD receiver. Otherwise I would have bought the adaptor to go blu. The whole point is nearly moot as I am seriously considering a new 40" LCD 1080p tv with HDMI out the wazoo.

Odd, at first I thought I would want blu-ray for Spiderman 3. But Transformers is what put me over the top.

HDMI-DVI cable

2X1 Manual HDMI Switch

...plug both components with HDMI into the switcher, then run the HDMI-DVI cable to the TV.

Nice, but if I have to try to teach my family to use the switch box AND how to change the video input and switch back to tv, etc.... blu-ray will become a burden. Easier to go to a new tv. More fun too!

For $2,300 on Amazon you can get a 1080p Panasonic Viera Plasma 50"

Not much better picture than that at this price. (MSRP US$3499)

True that is a good deal for the Panny. However if you are going LCD, Sony Bravia or the new Samsung 65F series are the only two ways to go.

In order to get the best set up I could.. i had to do some pretty weird stuff...
for example, since the cable and the PS3 use HDMI, all my other games consoles and video input devices use RBD, ther eis no problem, but then when I upgraded my Wii to run a component video, I realizes that only one component video slot was available (the HDMI signals over-ride the other 2) and there was NO audio inputs except for an optical line, which the Wii doesn't support. That really sucks. Luckily I could set it up in such a weird way... the video is in component, and the audio is in MD input. So I have to turn on the video to the Wii and then change the audio to the MD and it will work.
Luckily my wife has not killed me over this stuff yet... but in my folks home I was the only one that knew how every electronic device was hooked up.

Absolutely, and for Panasonic, avoid their CRT displays. We had one for about 6 months and there were so many problems with it. The reds were actually neon. We had a guy try to repair it numerous times and finally Best Buy gave up and let us get a new TV. We got a Sony 57" rear projection CRT HDTV which would rock! Had my brother not been stoned and left the TV on for 3 days straight with nothing on the screen 2 days after we got it. I love him for that. Now the black levels just don't seem quite right but he doesn't care because he doesn't use it anymore.

I have to agree and stick with the Sony Bravia LCD. What could work better than a Sony player on a TV MADE to go with it?

However, I would have to stick with the 40" screen due to where the TV will sit. Maybe even less. Still bigger than my current 34" which is no slouch in the size department!

Not related, but I love this line...
