Default God of War 3/PS3 Question?

I am new to the PS3, even though I owned it for a long time, but I stopped playing it for over 2 years. :P Ok on the back of the case it says it goes to 1080i on God of War 3? I set the display settings to automatic, and since I plugged my HDMI in my PS3 goes to 1080P.

I start the game it switches to 720P, not 1080i like I thought? I then leave the game after a little, and go to display and go to custom settings and disable 720P, and instead of going to 1080i it goes to 1080P? I thought it couldn't go there? Am I really experiencing 1080P? And without removing 720P why does it preset to 720P? I thought it was supposed to be 1080Pi?
Help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
T_B

most games are 720p. the back of the box is not always accurate. some games, if 1080 is supported, you have to force it. this is done by unchecking 720 in the hdmi set up on the ps3. if it doesnt support 1080 and you do this, then it will default to 480p. 1080 support is only 720 upscaled. check this link for more info....

Ok I a little confused? It says it's on 1080P, yet it's really 480P? It says it goes to 1080i, but if I make it go to 1080i will it just go back to 480P?

when its 1080 p/i, its actually 720p upscaled to 1080p/i. like upconverted dvd to hd. if you make it go 1080i (by unchecking 720p) it will display at 1080i UNLESS the game doesnt support 1080, then it will go 480p.

Ok, when I leave it at default where my PS3 automatically has 1080P. I start the game and it goes to 720P and not 1080i. The game says 1080i on the case, so if I uncheck 1080P and 720P it will actually be at 1080i and not downscaled to 480P. If I make it go to 1080P, and even if it says it's 1080P on my TV while I am playing my game it will actually be 480P. is this information correct?
By the way, thank you so much for this information!

If I understand you correctly, your TV will always say 1080p, because that's the only resolution it can display. It will upscale/deinterlace any resolution coming into it so that it can display 1080p. Basically whatever your TV displays as far as resolution is irrelevant because it's converting everything to 1080p.

So if I put it at 1080P it won't really be downgraded to 480P like un4gvn94538 said?? My TV says it's 1080P, but the game said it only goes to 1080i yet without me forcibly making it 1080i or 1080P it automatically goes to 1080P if I set the display setting as automatic.

Your TV will always say 1080p because that's the only resolution it can display. It is in no way an indicator of the video resolution coming from the PS3. If a game is downscaled to 480p by the PS3 the TV is going to upscale it to 1080p because your TV can't display 480p. If the PS3 is sending the TV 720p then the TV is going to upscale to 1080p. If the PS3 is sending the TV 1080i then the TV is going to deinterlace it and display 1080p. However the quality won't be as good as a true 1080p source. Upscaling to 1080p from 480i/p or 720p or 768p will never look as good as a 1080p source. I haven't kept up with what the PS3 does with video scaling for games that are made in 720p or 768p. Un4gvn is probably right.

i didnt think to take the tv into consideration as to why it was showing 1080p. what ive been saying before is what is actually coming out of the ps3. very few games are resolutions other than 720/768.

im still using my 1080i rptv so im not sure, but cant a tv that can display 1080p also display 720p? i thought they could.

the link i provided (i know, its a lot of information there) does show examples of games that show 1080 support on the back when they actually dont, and games that dont show on the back but do. so for future games use that list (its usually updated wth the most popular games) to find out if a game actually supports 1080 or not. dont rely on the box.

imo, native is better so i would (if i could) play at 720. if you tv doest support 720 then only check what it does support in the set up. let the ps3 do the rest. sony says my tv supports 720. its a lie. it will down convert to 480p. so i let the ps3 do the work and leave 720 unselected.

I think there's some lack of clarity between the TVs native resolution and what the PS3 is outputting and that is causing some confusion. When it comes to flat panel TVs, they can only display one resolution. If it's a 1080p TV then everything that's fed to it is converted to 1080p. If it's a 720p TV then everything is converted to 720p. I used to have an RPTV also and it could change resolutions between 480p, 720p, and 1080i but my plasma can't do that.

is that the case with all tvs? isnt there some flat panels that can display 720 and 1080 instead of converting it? cant the scaling be turned off?

No, my tv only says 1080P if I make it 1080P or click automatic. I've seen it say 720P, 1080i, etc.If I choose automatic it starts at 1080P, and as soon as I start God of War 3 my tv says 720P. But if I take away 720P, it will say 1080P. If I unchecked 1080P it would say 1080i.

I was under the impression that flat panel models only display one resolution and everything else is converted. There may be models out there that can transition but I'm not aware of any.

Oh Ok. Sorry about that then. What model of TV do you have?

thats what i was saying to make it 1080 from the ps3. forget what i was saying about 480, doesnt apply to you. the ps3 is scaling to your desired resolution when you change settings.

apparently the op's can. especially if its a 1080p display, i would hate if the ability to display 720p was missing and i was forced to scale everying. there is something to be said for displaying images in thier native resolution regardlessof the resolution. i was under the opposite impression
