Default Philips BDP5012 pausing itself?

My Philips BDP5012 seems to be pausing itself every 5 minutes. Has anyone else ever heard of this problem or know of a solution?

Whats been done:

I watched the Blu-Ray of crank 2 High Voltage the other day. I finished watching it and after an extremely long time (3-4 min) of displaying black (and refusing to eject the disc for another 2-3 min) I turned the player off.

I then started watching Star Trek The Original Series Season 3 (on Blu-ray) and the first episode on the first disc started pausing itself every 5 minutes (though it did not say "pause" on the screen, it would just do so. I would press play and it would resume again) *note* the main menu screen's background animations actually paused to

I searched the internet but found nobody with this or similar problems with any player, though I did find that there was a new firmware available (1.008, while my original had firmware 1.000) so I upgraded via burned cd as directed by the Philips website.

Things seemed to be going fine after that. I watched the rest of the first disc of star trek, then the next disc, and the next, and now I'm on the 4th disc and it has started pausing by itself again! (this time it actually says "pause" on screen when this happens) *note* the animation leading up to the menu paused also before playing the episode

I turned the player off and on again, and the blu-ray seem to be playing without pauses. What could be causing this?

could the crank 2 disc have caused a problem with my player?

is the problem permanent, yet intermittent?

could the episodes of said discs be defective in some way? any one ever hear of such a disc defect? (though the same problem does not happen on the same episodes when re-checked)

Is it time to start shopping for a new player?

-thanks
