Default Honestly, how can people hate Friday the 13th Part 5: New Beginning?

I bought this at my Walgreens for $3.99. 2.0 channel audio & anamorphic widescreen.

I've heard so much bad $hit about it, that I was calling myself a fool as I was buying it. The reviews on IMDB look a little low, but nothing out of the ordinary from a slasher movie. I did note that some people tend to really like it, while others dislike it. My best friend does not like it at all, but I honestly think it's the type of movie that's up his alley, and I'm going to try to get him to watch it again.

Honestly, it's actually not bad. I was very shocked. Here are my bullet point thoughts:

* Lots of kills. More-so that most F13th movies.

* The kills are a bit more tame, but some of them are pretty gruesome. Overall, I'm very positive about the kills in this movie.

* It doesn't matter if Jason wasn't the killer. It adds a nice twist, and besides, they used the actual character of "Jason" for just about all of the kills. You still get Jason killing stuff....in a way.

* The characters are so bad they are completely funny. The hicks crack me up, "COME IN AND GET YOUR STEW YOU MOTHER F*#@ER!". Everything is so stereotypical that it really just adds sugar on the cake. Remember the chick in the upstairs bedroom who kept listening to that awful music? Oh man, I was roaring with LOLs.

* The ending is both interesting and kinda stupid, but it does have a pretty cool twist. I figured this out before because I was expecting it, but it should definitely catch a portion of the audience off guard.

* Sure, it's no better than Friday the 13th 1-4, but I actually humored myself more than any other Friday with it. I honestly wouldn't mind watching it again.

* I would rather watch this movie than A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and 5.

* I would WAY rather watch this movie over Friday the 13th (2009), Jason Goes to Hell, Jason takes Manhattan, and Jason X. Infact, I probably might like it more than Friday the 13th part 6 and 7 (It's been a very long time).

* Tommy Jarvis can fight really good on screen. Obviously, there's not much in the way of acting or talking, but crap, that dude can scrap and make it look pretty damn real

* Chainsaw vs Machete, Tractor vs Jason...it's got it all.

It's actually slightly dipping into the "awesome" realm. If you like slashers, and if you like cheesy ones, you can't not like Friday the 13th part 5.

Will have to swing by Wal-Green's soon and thumb through their DVDs a bit, then.

The fact that

ruined it for many people.

I think it's a dumb thing for people to get mad about. It adds more complexity within the story (Friday the 13th movies have the most simplest plots on the planet and this delineation strengthens it a bit). Besides, they still used
[Show spoiler]Jason's character to do all of the killings
.

It's very Friday the 13th IMO, and it's cheesy as heck. I love this movie, and I want to watch it again tonight. It doesn't fall behind Friday's 1-4 that much in entertainment value. Besides, Friday the 13th 5 has a 22 body count, which is probably the most out of any Friday (especially so far in the series). It doesn't bore, let's just say that.

Be sure to repeatedly fall down every five seconds while running very slowly and always looking behind you, as though you are new to walking.

LOL the funniest kill to me was the one in the re-make where a girl falls off the water skis and then gets skewered under the bridge.

I liked the fact that it wasn't Jason...it kind of threw a curve ball at the audience when you first saw it!

I don't...I thought it was a riot...I only saw it a couple of times, so I don't remember all the characters names, but I laughed so hard at the beginning when the one kid (the son of the guy who ends up being 'Jason') offers the guy (who's chopping wood) part of his 'chocolate bar,' just as long as he doesn't "tell the girls," and the guy tells him to get lost...so the kid tells him he thinks he's "way out of line" or something like that, and the guy then whacks him with the axe it was so idiotic, but hilarious at the same time...I also loved near the end when Tommy beats the crap out of the motorcycle guy who kept giving him a hard time the whole movie Hysterical...

Yes absolutely agree. The mother was hilarious, the way she 'spits' into the stew that she's making...it's her son with the motorcycle that Tommy beats up, if I recall correctly

Originally i didn't like it, but this one has grown on me over the years. Plus Miguel Nunez is in it (he was Spider in Return of the Living Dead), so this movie definitely has my seal of approval.

Its better than 3, 6, 8, and WAY better than Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X.

I thought it was a perfectly fine addition to the series. All the hatred stems from the identity of the killer, IMO. But that's silly. They were attempting to set Tommy up as the new killer in the series after killing off Jason in part 4. In retrospect, yeah, Jason is the iconic killer of the series. But back in the mid- 80s, it made sense to try to continue the series that way. It didn't work, and Jason came back in part 6 (my personal favorite of the series). No harm done. Doesn't make part 5 any less fun or enjoyable in my book.

Sometimes I wonder where we'd be today had they continued the series with Tommy as the killer. Jason would have only been the killer in parts 2-4. He probably wouldn't be as iconic as he is today, and people would be debating which Friday killer was the best. Perhaps Tommy would have eventually been killed as well and replaced by someone else. Who knows where it would have gone. Just a what if.

No blood. No suspense. No characters worth (even mildly) caring about. No visual style. A New Beginning is the antithesis of what made The Final Chapter so great.

At least it had plenty of nudity.

I have to disagree with that. Tommy Jarvis is by far my favorite character (other than Jason) in the Friday series. I also thought Pam was a perfectly likable character, and didn't hate the kid (shockingly) or his grandfather. And I was pretty bummed when the kid's older brother got killed. I liked him despite having such little screen time. YMMV.

Other than that, yes, this entry was butchered by the MPAA. They really had it in for this series.

Being a huge fan of the series, this one rates near the end of my favorites list. Yes, when it was released, I was bummed that it wasn't the real Jason. As Jason Lives came around, I didn't mind the New Beginning so much. I thought it was a necessary break in the series and thought it worked well to continue the story line after Jason's demise in the Final Chapter. The ending left me dying for the next "Friday", but I really didn't want to see Tommy as a copycat Jason. All in all, I liked the New Beginning and even cross the country for chances to meet the cast from the entire saga.
