Default Stepping out of your genre comfort zone

What movie(s), if any, have you seen, that were outside of your usual viewing comfort zone that after viewing, you were glad that you had taken that step outside your comfort zone?

The thread's primary focus is on the movie itself as to message and delivery, not so much the PQ or AQ.

Greetings from Atlanta (Georgia Tech) and nice collection!

Probably the biggest such example of this is when I went to see Up in theaters last year. I had never liked/made a point to watch Pixar movies until that point and I had never seen a 3D movie before then, either, but I ended up watching that movie THREE times in theaters. Now I own them all, and I just finished watching the last one I hadn't seen all the way through (Cars) this afternoon. Pretty good as well.

Greetings Wilky. Georgia Tech all the way! My dad was a ramblin' wreck. Thanks for the compliment as well.

I can relate to your post. I to had to get past the "this is a kid's movie and it will be beneath a grown man to watch" kind of attitude. Once I did, I was glad to have seen it and add it to my collection. I suppose it speaks to the proverbial kid inside us all. Like you, I will be adding other Pixar and Disney Classics to my wish list on Amazon.

That is another film that was out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed reading the books but didn't think the book would translate well to screen. I liked it. I haven't seen the latest one though.

The Torture films were well outside of my comfort zone. I just did not see the point of the films. Hostel was not a bad film though, but I still find it hard to see the point and why we need movies like it.

Rent. I thought I would hate it but a buddy of mine talked me into going to see it in the theatre and I loved it. I even went to see the play after that and burned a copy of the soundtrack.

I just remembered Firefly/Serenity ( I know Firefly is not a movie but I watched it first). I didn't want to watch it when it was presented to me but after the first episode, I was hooked.

"The Adventures of Baron Munchausen." Had a friend of mine not been so adamant that I see it, I'd never have viewed it by choice, which would've been a huge mistate! In only one viewing, the film became a favorite of mine!

Serendipity, and Keeping The Faith.
I HATE romantic comedies, but found both to be quite good.

P.S.:Why do we need torture movies? Why do we feel the need to jump out of airplanes? Why do ppl come from all corners of the earth to run down streets to avoid getting gored by a bull (which could easily be avoided by NOT GOING)?

For me the only movies that I don't usually watch are sports films as I am not really into sports, but saw Hoosiers and loved it.

I more or less watch every genre, hence my collection, this is of course reffering to films. I do watch documentaries but not as frequently as movies and I don't tend to ever watch a documentary more then once. I don't watch music concerts outside of some operas ever (I prefer listening to music without the image so I am immeresed entirely by the music and not 'distracted' by the image).
