Congrats on the new purchase! If you don't mind me asking, how much did it set you back? Price would determine whether or not you could have done better going a different direction, but with that said: I owned a H/K AVR154 and LOVED IT! Yes, pre-amps are good - they give you the headroom to grow your setup with an amp and more juice to your speakers...with that said it gives you room to move from 8ohm speakers to 6 and 4 ohm models. The AVR 354 is a good pick, a real beaut to look at and has enough features to keep you going!

What were your other choices in regards to AVR's?

The pre-outs on the receiver are for adding an external amplifier to further power your speakers. This additional power will help the clarity and sound of your speakers, that is, when, and if, you decide to add an amp. Without one, you would need to buy not only the amp, but a new receiver as well.

You are doing a better job than I did when I started. I got my first HD receiver without pre-outs, and had to buy another new receiver with them when I wanted to add an amp 2 years later.

Enjoy your new receiver, however I can't say I am all too familar with it.

Marantz 5004 I believe, It' sbeen highly regarded as a great choice from refurb for 500$.

The Sony DN1000 - Looke dint oi tseeing as most my equipment is Sony. I also heard good things from them

HK 254 or 354 - I wanted something simple and I knew the 254 had preouts, bu tthen I realized I wanted something to hold me off for awhile. So I was able to scoop the 354 up for 425$. With Amazon Prime got a discount on shipping .

Also with the Ipod slot it helped to have the wife agree.

You think I shouldve Got the Marantz???or the DN1000???

My bought my refurbed 354 and love it as well. I had an Onkyo 606 before, and found it to be more powerful, warmer, and have a fuller sound. Those HK 75 watts are golden! I'm sure you will love it!
