Default The blues

Surely I can't be the only one on the forum who listens to the oldies and the goodies right? Off the top of my head, ten of my favorite albums and their most defining feature(s) are:

Magic Sam - West Side Soul (guitar/powerful vocals)
Otis Rush - Right Place Wrong Time (guitar)
Paul Butterfield Blues Band - East-West (guitar/harmonica)
[their s/t and Pigboy Crabshaw are also excellent]

Albert King - Live Wire-Blues Power (guitar)
Willie Dixon - I Am the Blues (laid-back, bass-driven/piano)
Memphis Slim - At the Gate of Horn (horns/piano)
Charlie Musselwhite - Stand Back (also laid-back, piano/harmonica-driven)
Buddy Guy - A Man and the Blues (guitar)
Albert Collins - Ice Pickin (guitar)
Luther Allison - Love Me Mama (guitar)

I guess I'm pretty fond of the Chicago blues style. I saw Buddy Guy/B.B. King a couple months back and the former blew the latter out of the water. Some of these guitarists make sounds and play the guitar in ways I didn't think possible.

I tend not to pick particular songs as I always play my media from start to finish, and there is always one cut on there that I like just as well.

Here though is a short list of some of the Blues performers I enjoy.

John Lee Hooker
Keb' Mo'
Muddy Waters
David Gogo
Charlie Musselwhite
Danny Gatton
Robert Cray
Eric Johnson
Johnny "Guitar" Watson
Powder Blues Band
Skip James
Sonny Boy Williamson

just to name a few........

John

I was listing albums, which I play from start-to-finish typically.

Both of us forgot John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, though.

Perhaps I should also mention that the record that originally got me interested in the blues artists was the Black Keys' Chulahoma EP, which is a six-track EP released in 2006 that covers Junior Kimbrough songs. Bluesier than their normal sound, but then I started getting into Magic Sam, etc.

I should have included him as well. Additionally I would probably add Colin James to that list as well, although it could be argued he's not a full-time blues player.

And sorry to have caused confusion with my prior post. I should have looked a little closer.

While I enjoy watching movies, music is really my number one passion. Lately I've been doing a lot more listening than watching, and the blues happens to be my specialty. So out of curiosity (and a little boredom ) I decided to search this forum to see if I could unearth any other signs of life. So here I am, resurrecting a three year old thread that probably nobody else will care about, read or relate to. Not that I have a problem with that really. I've been listening to this music for over twenty years and actually revel in it's obscurity. To be honest, I was surprised that I even found an existing thread on the subject on here at all It's nice to see that at least a few other members 'round here even like the stuff

As far as my own tastes are concerned, I skew towards the more traditionally-minded artists in the genre and listen to everything from the earliest forms of the music all the way up to modern recordings. My collection is rather robust and reflects a wide-ranging selection of tastes and styles, but if I had to pin it down to my absolute favorites, it would have to be West Coast and Texas blues. My preference is for that small area that exists between blues and jazz, where the musicians really know how to swing it, and these two sub-genres really nail it for me.

Here's a few of my favorite recordings:

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown "Pressure Cooker"
Junior Watson "Long Overdue"
Hollywood Fats Band "The Complete 1979 Studio Sessions"
Rick "L.A. Holmes" Holmstrom "Lookout!"
Nick Curran and the Nitelifes "Nitelife Boogie"
Kim Wilson "My Blues"
Kid Ramos "West Coast House Party"
Knock-Out Greg & Blue Weather "The Wig-Flipper"
Lightnin' Hopkins "Lightnin' and the Blues"
Lonnie Johnson "Blues by Lonnie Johnson"
Tiny Grimes "Food for Thought"
Duke Robillard "Duke's Blues"
B.B. King "Spotlight on Lucille"
Al Smith "Hear my Blues"
James Harman Band "Extra Napkins"
Big Rhythm Combo "Too Small to Dance"
The Four Blazes "Mary Jo"
Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson "Kidney Stew Is Fine"
T-Bone Walker "T-Bone Blues"
Howlin' Wolf "Memphis Days: The Definitive Edition Vol. 1 & 2"

Well, I guess I'll just stop right there... cause I could just keep on going and going . This is just a small example of my knowledge on the subject. If anyone has any questions or wants to talk shop feel free to hit me up.
