Default Avatar the new Star Wars?

Oh no another Avatar thread!!

Please hear (read) me out.

After my sixth time viewing this, it hit me.
The technical advancements
The story details (yet this story has been told before it is slightly different)
The impact on home media
The beginning of a technical(3D) revolution.

I am 44 and in 1977 I remember Star Wars before it was called a new hope on memorial day weekend. At the time it was unbelievable. But not until many years later did we learn it was a GAME CHANGER. It's story was fresh the "special" effects have never seen before. It seemed to change everything.

Since then a lot of wanna be's have come and gone. He (George) could not out do himself with the PT. We needed something fresh, painstakingly fresh. James Cameron took the time and a lot of it to give us Avatar.

During my second home watching I realized I was taking for granted the scope of the CGI I was seeing. The ferns, every alien being, almost all of what I was seeing was not in the real world. AND I DID NOT NOTICE. And when the last half hour kicked in...HOLY sh!&!!. I was immersed in a world where our people (the marine who I love) were being beat and I loved it. I made a connection with the people of Pandora.

I think for most of us serious movie fans we were so caught in the technical merit the first few times we missed the story.

There is a reason why this movie broke all box office records.
There is a reason why this movie will break al media sales records.
There is a reason why this movie will advance the allure of 3D (without being gimmicky)

This movie is a game changer and

This movie could be the new Star Wars as far as how it will affect the movie industry

I would give Avatar a few more years (maybe 10) before it gains that status.

I agree that its new and revolutionary for the time though only because of technology.

This movie is not a GAMECHANGER, nor is it near Star Wars/Trek, LOTR, etc level.

Awesome movie.

Awesome story.

1.5 million Blu-rays in a day. It's like the Matrix of DVD.

Biggest deliverer of 3D technology to Blu-ray.

Awesome.

I love Avatar, but I think it's got a long way to go in a future far away, before it comes close to what Star Wars has become over the Generations.

I'm glad this thread was made because about halfway through the movie I was thinking how this feels like an epic like Star Wars to me.

It's lacking a really successful merchandising campaign.

There's a few toys. But nothing like what Star Wars was like back in the day.

It certainly is close. But I don't think it has eclipsed the Star Wars franchise.

For someone who theatrically lived through all of the above said mentioned movies, LOTR TREK, SW Yada Yada, my statement comes from my experiences.

Beliefs can only come from experiences. Many opinions will abound and my original post is like all others here an OPINION.

But when there are so may concurrencies, I am led to believe that there is something different about this movie.

New adopters of Blu that I know (maybe 4) said that this looks totally better than anything they have seen. When I was at Walmart I heard DVD owners say buy the blu ray we'll get one soon.

I have even read here that retailers should demo this to increase Blu sales.

Is it Casablanca? no
Godfather? No way

But as a package..
My gut feeling is, that this movie made strides that no other has since...
you know

Beast I respect you soooo much
(you know a but is coming)

But

I am talking about cinema not marketing. Very solid point about the merch but cinematically wise, as most will say...wait and see.

More than anything this was my prediction more than a fact.

I love Blu-ray.com!!

Yes it is. As in Cameron is going to be the new Lucus. Meaning that Cameron is only going to give sh*t about this movie for the next 30+ years and will force 10-15 versions of the same movie and sequels on us.
Cameron give us True Lies then get the hell out of Hollywood!!!!!

If I thought there could be a top-notch sequel or two I "might" agree. But I don't. The way the first movie ended I don't see a sequel being anywhere near as good. I hope I'm wrong though.

Yeah. But part of Star Wars' longtime appeal was the kids who grew up with it.

Who had the toys, the cards and stickers, the bedsheets. And other stuff.

I really doubt 30+ years from now, people will be looking back at Avatar like they do SW.

I don't think so. 3-D has been around since the 50's. This is more or less an animated film. A good film, but not great! Will everyone go out and buy 3-D tv's with such minimal content, unlikely. 3-D will be a very niche market. Very little content out there period. Converting as we saw with Clash of the Titans or any other old movie they wish to convert will look like a colorized B&W movie.

Have you guys thought that maybe the Matrix (first movie) is a game changer as well. The idea wasn't fresh (Terminator) but the visuals and the complexity of the story were fresh.

I would agree but they should have thought out the 2nd and 3rd movies scrips. That's what killed it for me and why I only own the 1st Matrix.
