Default Should I wait?

Well, a few of us were planning on giving a very good friend of ours a new BD player. We kinda wanna go with the Sony BDP-S300 since Best Buy has it on sale with 7 free BDs. But here's my question...

Should we wait for the 3rd gen players? From what Im reading this player is not going to be able to support PiP when the October deadline hit and the loading time is really long on some movies like PotC. Reason why we are thinking about getting it now is due to the 2 free BD offer along with the 5 mail-in BDs, we are thinking about buying it and keep it till xmas then give it to her.
The receiptant is not very computer savvy so PS3 is kinda out of the question at this point, unless it is a last resort. I know I can show her how to use it, but I know she would much rather have a standalone player.

Any thoughts?

If you're not going to be giving it to her til Christmas, I'd probabaly wait. Not only will you get more up to date players, but the prices are expected to come down for the holidays. It's not too big of a stretch to say that the free disc promotion may be in effect for the holidays, since this holiday season will probably make or break one of the two formats.

I guess it's up to you to decide whether or not the PiP feature will be important enough for your friend or not. If not, then there is really no reason to wait for any new generation player to come out.

Of course, you could always get him a PS3, which will definitely get a firmware update sometime in late October or early November to allow it to play PiP with Blu-rays.

PS3 is a good choice, except nothing is definate...we can only hope that a firmware update will be able to add the added features of profile 1.1, in addition to supporting DTS-MA

Sony down, Samsung down...We've got Sharp Aquos left to confirm for post-October, and that's the ballgame till '08.

Let me say this then. I am more certain about the PS3 getting a firmware update allowing the PiP features to work in it than it getting a firmware update supporting DTS-MA.

That's for sure, PIP is easy to do with software, audio decoding is a bear when it comes to software.

Default Pip

I was also thinking of getting the BDP-S300. What is PIP exactly?

As long as the picture quality doesn't change with the 3rd generation players then I'll probably end up getting the BDP-S300.

Default Wait

I would definately wait on that one, she may not get the free Blu ray's but she will get a better player probably at a cheaper price.

Firmware updates generally fix a lot of stuff. I suppose there are scores of people out there with first generation players lamenting their purchase. Well, an original Sony blu-ray player with 2.0 firmware will play just as well as a new player with the same firmware.

Fluff.
If you are not interested in the extras (fluff) and just want to watch a movie in a great format (Blu Ray) buy now.
Some people like the extras.

If you want to wait for Profile 1.1/BD-Live players, do you intend on saving more money to put into this gift or don't you? There is a possibility that the new profile players may be more expensive.

Pricing isnt really an issue, there is about 5-6 of us going in on this together. Just the extra 7 BDs was really attractive and we wouldnt want something that will be outdated in like 6 month... Anyone know if the current 2nd gen players will be able to have those features as soon as the Profile 1.1 players come out through firmware? What about loading time? I returned a BDP-S300 and got 2nd ps3 due to the long loading time on movies.
