USA Anime Wishlist Megathread

Anime owns. But Anime remains niche in the general public, so instead of just having individual title Blu-ray wishlist threads that will inevitably fall off the Wishlist page, we can have one thread we keep adding our title wishes too. Good idea? I hope so.

Currently there are several, previously released on DVD, anime titles I would love to see brought to Blu-ray in the US market.

1. Steamboy. Probably the best Steampunk anything ever. IMO. Lush art direction, would really take advantage of Blu-ray video. I believe the DVD was put out by Sony Pictures, but I'm not sure if the title is still on their radar to get a re-release on Blu.

2. The Girl that Leapt Through Time. I'm kinda wondering why this didn't get an HD release the first go around, it didn't come out that long ago.

3. 5 Centimeter's Per Second/Anything by Makoto Shinkai. The animation on 5 Cen. and The Place Promised in our Early Days was jaw dropping in Standard-Def DVD. Just imagine it in High Def. ADV had the rights, but they recently had to restructure to become Sentai Filmworks. I believe they lost the rights to all of Makoto Shinkai's works at some point. So someone needs to get those licenses back. ASAP.

4. Macross Plus. Macross Plus is one of my 'Big Five' anime movies that really brought me into Anime back in 2001 (along with Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, and The Venus Wars*) Though I prefer the four-episode OVA more, I'll take the movie in High-Def. Granted, I don't even think its on Blu in Japan yet. So this will probably be a while. Nevermind all the licensing issues Macross-anything has coming out in R1/A.
*the only other of my 'Big Five' currently not on Blu-ray. And if it ever does get a Blu... I will literally eat a hat. Hell, I'll take an anamorphic DVD. I'm not picky.

Besides that, Anime licensers seem to be dragging their heels on bringing Summer Wars over to the US. That really needs to be corrected, and soon. Same for Evangelion 2.22: You Can (not) Advance.

So yeah, Anime on Blu-ray seems to be woefully lacking at the moment over all. There's a lot of great anime out there that can benefit from a high-def upgrade.

Summer Wars
Welcome to the Space Show
Evangelion 2.22, End of Evangelion, Series
Azumanga Daioh
Gundam 0079
Gundam 0083

I'd also say FLCL, but Funimation's on the case.

Is it getting a Blu? I know its coming to DVD. I haven't heard anything about Blu-ray. I know Trigun is coming to Blu though.

EDIT: Or are you saying that because Funimation has FLCL's license, you are terrified they might try to put it on Blu-ray? Cause now that I think of it... that's probably what you mean.

Evangelion 2.22 You can (not) Advance should be out by next year or so otherwise you can easily import it.
End of Evangelion and Death and Rebirth were shot on Film so they could easily be on Blu-ray. The series won't be any improvement video wise and perhaps audio as well. The best release would be Renewal (Platinum) DVDs to watch those. If it does get on Blu-ray I would hope that all bonus features, music videos, the Symphony of Evangelion Concert and maybe FMVs from the various video games were to be included otherwise it would seem as a waste on Blu-ray since they can't do much to improve the audio and video.

Azumanga Daioh wouldn't experience any improvements on Blu-ray other than being on 2-discs.

Since FLCL is getting a Blu-ray in Japan very soon I think Funi won't have any trouble releasing it.

Would Trigun be the Remixed version? I've not seen that in years.

Funimation has said that FLCL, Trigun, and Full Metal Panic along with the Fumoffu are coming as a dvd and Blu-ray release when they come out simultaneously.

From Osamu Tezuka:
  1. Metropolis, it really is time for a North American release.
  2. All Astro Boy releases. They were all made on cells and film, so HD joy! I'd happily import them even in Japanese.
  3. Jungle Emperor Leo, any chances of this coming out here some day?
  4. Any Phoenix movie or the 2004 TV series.
  5. And just about anything else.

Other Anime:
  1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
  2. Perfect Blue
  3. Brave Story
  4. Millenium Actress
  5. The Castle of Cagliostro
  6. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
  7. Air
  8. Spirited Away
  9. Steamboy

Yep, Funi said it themselves.

Also, to add more to the list: More Miyazaki. In particular I'd like Kiki's Delivery Service most.

I knew that Summer was getting a Japanese bd release, but I didn't hear anything about a US one....then I did a little bit of reading and according to Affenheim, Funimation has the license to it and is releasing (if all goes to schedule/subject to delay) on August 24??? Is this true???

Anime News Network hasn't posted any news about a US release on Summer Wars. So I'd take any news you hear with a grain of sand. I'm following Summer Wars news very closely, and currently its a big mystery.

Summer Wars Blu-ray

Yeah 8/24 was the last date I saw for U.S. version. Funimation was working on a dub and as long as everything goes according to schedule.

UK Version release date is 10/11.

Korean Version release date TBA.

My list is long, I don't import so I'm referring to US releases for these:

Patlabor the Movie
Patlabor 2 the Movie

It was out and at the moment it is extremely rare since has been discontinued. Hopefully it gets a new release with or without the book as it was before.

I do not care how long it takes, yes I want lots and lots of anime movies on Blu Ray but I want my first to be Project A-Ko and then I will start buying others from there. It is my all time favorite, it was the first I owned on VHS, and DVD, it will be my first on Blu Ray, no matter how long it takes. Until that happens I will not buy 1 single anime on Blu Ray.

That will take forever. No one holds the rights to it in the US anymore. Japan might come out with a Blu-ray but I highly doubt.

Anyway its a good movie and had some great sequals though Grey Side and Blue Side Alternate Realities OAVs weren't as good as the main series was especially the first one.
