Default Getting PS3 tonight - is firmware needed???

I'm planning on purchasing a PS3 tonight from BestBuy. Am I going to have to download any firmware before I can play movies?

If so, any link to download would be great.

Thanks!

congrats! nope, the movies play out of the box. however, you might want to update the firmware first as there have been some "enhancers" to movie playback that have come in recent updates (ie: 24fps, super-white RBG)

No download link necessary, unless for some reason your internet connection with the PS3 is slow. Just create an account, setup your internet connection and then do a firmware upgrade.

Congrats blu buddy,

no need for firmware updates right away.

you can update your PS3 by going to the settings menu.

but whenever you have the time, definately do the firmware upgrade!

Good Luck and Enjoy!

You have to create an account? Pretty sure the last time I helped a friend do it, I just did it via the settings menu and check for updated software.

If your firmware is before 1.80, it will NOT upscale standard DVDs and the image will look rather soft. You can download the firmware from Sony's Playstation site (current is v1.90) to a PC. You can then copy the firmware file (PUP) to a 256MB flash card and update the PS3. Note you must place the update in folders and the folder names must be in UPPERCASE for the update to work.

my display is the Samsung LN-T4661F which only does 1080p/60. is there any benefit of going 24fps ?

all that fps stuff confuses me! i noticed you have the 4065 which is also 1080p/60.
what do i need to do to get the best picture... again, all that stuff confuses me!

The details kinda fuzzy. But for first time user, you have to set all of the time zone and such first before you're allowed to update. I could be wrong.

If you have a wired or wireless connection id recommend that over trying to downloading the update and putting it onto a memory card, that crap didn't work for me.

I got a PS3 a couple weeks ago. I have to say, the firwmare upgrades are sooooo easy to do. I recommend doing them before you watch movies, just because, like someone else mentioned, there are enhancements added to the system. But like I said, it's terribly easy and worth doing the upgrades. Enjoy!

When you get your PS3 tonight, make sure you buy a bunch of Blu-rays as well. Support Warner if possible.

Jonty & MdGRwl, also don't forget to send away for your 5 free Blu-ray movies.

There are step by step instructions with your PS3 that you can follow. If you follow those carefully you should have no trouble getting yourselves up and running in no time.

I have the Samsung HL-S6187W which also accepts 24Hz. I went ahead and grabbed the 1.9 FW - at the very least I thought I'd be able to notice a difference in fast moving action sequences, but no dice. However, I'm also sitting 14' from the screen. About the only thing I noticed was a flicker when ps3 switches to 24hz mode when I pop in a blu-ray disc.

Make sure that you pick up an HDMI cable, if you want to watch at 1080p
