Mark Cuban: The internet is 'dead and boring'...

Quote:
Mark Cuban: The internet of today versus what I suggested to the committee would happen if internet speeds to the home increased to 1 gigabyte per second, is like comparing the plane Orville and Wilbur Wright built in 1903 to a brand-new Boeing.

We have reached a point of diminishing returns with today’s internet. The speed of broadband to your home won’t increase much more in the next five years than it has in the last five years. That is not enough to work as a platform for new levels of applications that will require much, much higher levels of bandwidth.

Broadband to the home isn’t fast enough for downloads of movies at DVD quality to be ubiquitous. That means it’s no longer a platform for technological innovation.
I agree, and I don't think quality HD downloads will happen anytime soon.

Wow this is EXACTLY why I keep saying downloading HD video will never replace HD DVD or BD anytime soon. It first requires new internet technology. It can certainly replace DVD because of size. But our current internet speed technology is not fast enough or large enough bandwidth to deal with filesizes compared to BD or HD DVD quality video.

I went to a friend's house where he was showing me how stupid buying HD shiny disks are. He just had a brialliant idea and showed me this biittorrent thing where he starts downloading some HD 1920x1080 matrix and a whole bunch of other things marked 1920x1080.

Funny thing is, the next weekend, I was at his house and asked him about the HD downloads. He said, "It's more than halfway done!" It seems these things download chunks in small batches - fills up inidividual rar files, sometimes lose connection for hours.

If it takes 2 weeks to steal a HD movie, I think people will keep buying disks, which is a good thing.

Resolution is NOTHING without good compression. I highly doubt your friends downloading video quality equal to a BD. Find out how big the file is.. I bet it is not close to the size of video on a BD at all. It probably has a much lower bitrate and filesize and is far inferior to anything on a BD.

Torrents can be hit or miss as far as connections go.

edit: There may be large 20-30gb movies out there but I have yet to see any. They would also take forever to DL and require too much disc space imo.

Cuban = right about refs cheating.

Cuban = right about Internet bandwidth limiting content options.

Wow, a whole lot of people have been right over the past few years on that one!

I think the NBA better pay back all the fines they dished out against folks who dared to speak against their "saintly" refs.

Part of the problem is the bottle neck we get with 100Mb Ethernet cable. Much of the internet is still wired with this "ancient crap". 1000Gb has been available for about a decade, but not very wide spread to my knowledge.

Highspeed via cable and fiber is nice, but I don't know if they could carry the bandwidth needed for a 1080 picture without additional compression.

Cable modem, but the torrent thing is typically running at 15kbps and then stops. I think it could be the way this torrent thing works. It's supposed to be some mpeg2 15GB file split up into smaller .rar files.

I should call him up to see if he actually finished the files, but he's on away on vacation until school starts.

Speaking a bit more about he future of downloadable and streamed high qaulity content-I envision it with server farms sitting on local backbones serving a home appliance capable of storing for a one time use or one time burn to an optical medium. In Austin we have tons of unused backbone capacity with multiple SONET rings providing city-wide access. I can easily envision the Blockbusters, Hollywood Videos, and BestBuys dropping a storage farm off said backbone and serving up each house locally. Now tell me who is positioned with a powerful appliance that could be quickly adapted to do these things? Makes me wonder if those BD Players in the PS3 have more function than just reading.

Just spitballing here.

It depends on how many people are seeding and leeching a torrent. It also depends on those peoples connections. Primarily issues exist on the users machine. Possibly ports for torrent client are using need to be forwarded on the router. Torrents can be a massive pain in the ass when you get into big files like this. Much more of a reason to just buy the movie.

In the past five years?
My connection speed has doubled 3 times.

DVDs? Uhm... Pretty sure DVDs aren't all that high of bitrate. 8mbps?
I have 8mbps...
Mark Cuban is a tool!

Now, BDs... downloading? Streaming? Uhm, not yet.
Although, I do know someone that has Paxio(100mbps/100mbps) in Santa Clara California that sure as hell can stream a BD - that is, to another Paxio customer with the 100mbps Sym connection.

Paxio:

We are like junkies who demand more and more. New innovative ways never reach it to market because we take the easy wasteful way out.

Imagine you have created a new tech which is ready to go to market after years of devellopment then something like what Cuban wants happens. Your idea is worthless only because the junkie has their fix. All tech spun off your new idea is also gone. Inventions have been overlooked or forgotten because of the rapid pace of technology.

How much is too much? Do you think we should leave future generations any room to grow? Tough questions.

I'm in Austin and a Spurs fanatic too. However, as shown being a Blu-ray supporter, I don't ignore facts to support an emotonal conclusion. I despise Cuban's oncourt antics and can't stand to watch the man speak in public, but when he's right, he's right.

I've been arguing about this topic with many people in recent times. I've been a huge cynic of being able to download high definition movies with todays broadband infrastructure. That is why I always laugh at anyone who suggests that Microsoft's so called plan to launch a hi-def download service is lurking around the corner. BS! It's not happening for many-many more years.

Most people wouldn't even have the patience to download a dvd quality movie from the internet right now, much less a Blu-ray quality movie. Too many factors have to be improved for that to happen any time soon.

So in essence, Cuban is right.

Uhm, Got Burner?
I have several "files" and/or "folders" that are worth anywhere from $5.99 to $29.99.
Since I do have a burner drive, it is not all that hard to burn a hard copy of any of these "files" or "folders".

*NOTE* Blank BDs are somewhat of a limiting factor at this time.
Blank DVD-Rs are a non-issue, I have a spindle.
