We all know that Spielberg has insisted that HD DVD exclusive studios do not release any of his 'directed' titles on HD DVD only.

But, what about Spielberg's Amblin productions?

Spielberg did not direct Jurassic Park 3, Back to the Future (1,2 & 3) or even Twister. So, why don't Universal release these titles. They seem likely to be good sellers and excellent HD demo titles.

Is it because the Spielberg ban extends to Amblin movies too?

Interesting to note that 'Memoirs of a Geisha' is a Blu-ray exclusive & co-produced by Amblin (with Dreamworks & Columbia).

It would be very interesting if Spielberg has told Uni & Paramount that any title with Amblin involved cannot be HD DVD exclusive.

Amblin Entertainment is an American film and television production company founded by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall in 1982. Amblin is only a production studio, and has never distributed its own movies. Its logo features the silhouette of E.T. riding in the basket on Elliot's bicycle flying in front of the moon from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Amblin is named after Spielberg's first commercially-released film Amblin' (1968), a short film about a man and woman thumbing through the desert. The film, which cost $15,000 to produce, was shown for Universal Studios and won Spielberg more directing roles. Universal distributes many Amblin productions and Amblin operates out of a building on the Universal lot.

Not sure if that last sentence is true anymore.

Universal controls the DVD rights to Twister everywhere except for the USA (Warner holds the rights to domestic distribution in the US).

There's a rumor flying about that Twister will see release later this year; I haven't found confirmation yet, however.

No Amblin title is going to hit highdef for quite awhile, pretty much period.

Twister is a Warner Brothers movie... so no worries there...
