Australia BASIC - Do not buy!!!

KaiGusto made mention of michaeldvd.com.au reviewing this title confirming it is 1080i. A recent visit to Big W has complicated things even further. I saw Basic so decided to check it out. Sure enough, it says 1080i on the back. Now that in itself isn't completely damning, but certainly not preferable. It was what was above that in slightly smaller text that got me:

UPCONVERTED TO

Yep, not only is this one 1080i but it's not even true 1080. It's some average upconvert so I encourage everyone to stay away from it. This would be the first time I have thought ill of Icon. Up until now they have always been great, particularly with bringing lesser known titles to Blu-ray and also with SteelBooks. Yes, they've had a few 1080i releases but never this before.

Thumbs down in a big way.

Maybe it was shot in a lower resolution then 1080, but I seem to remember it bieng shot on film. In any case, this news blows for fans of the film.

It was filmed with Kodak 35mm.

I wanted to get this, I was just lucky I looked first. A real shame.

In Bruges doesn't look bad though. The transfer is top notch with an image that is highly detailed and well represented and of all the 1080i releases I've seen it's one of the better. 1080p would be ideal but it's not a huge detractor. At least it's legitimate 1080 but this release of Basic is just an upconverted DVD for all intents and purposes. Your only upgrade is the sound. It's a complete waste of a release. Hell, even an old HD master at 1080p would have been preferable to some upscaled rubbish.

Correct, and normally this would not bother me but the cover clearly states 1080p which is just plain horseshit.

I'd like to point out that our 1080i In Bruges is identical in quality to the more recent US 1080p, I've compared the images and they are pixel-identical.

No, Hard Candy is true 1080i/50 as I rented it and it is definitely a 1080 source. It's not upscaled, just interlaced like In Bruges.

Exept 1080i / 50 has a 4% speed up which is a pain in the ass.

There are indeed some good 1080i releases available (Once Were Warriors is a good example), but the main worry here is that it is upscaled to 1080i.

If this title was say 10 bucks, i'd take the hit for the forums and buy it and report back, but not at the current price.

Apparently the German disc is 1080p, anyone seen or got it?

The version on Prime is the terrible 1080i DVD upscale used on the non-German discs
