Sydney Australia
Default Blu Ray retail shelf space

Hi,

Just thought Id post my observations/experience looking for HiDef Movies in my neighbourhood in Sydney Australia.

==============================================
Target - 99% blu ray, there is a bluray movie shelf, no HDDVD shelf, 1 HDDVD title hidden in the blurays, all next to the ps3 games.definately no other HDDVD shelf ! They also had a bunch of what is blu ray brochures in the shelf.

Myers(virgin) - 50/50, in both cases a token stock amount (one of those cardboard bins with 12 titles each on BD and HDDVD).

Big W - 100% blu ray, no hddvd in site. they are running a special $29.95AUD for there blu ray titles (300,shooter, POTC 1&2, and many more)

JB HiFI - exclusive blu ray, over the past few months the shelf space at my local store has grown 300-400%. I got them to price match big w on a copy of shooter was $44 at jb but they price matched bigw at $29.95.

Dick Smith - an electronics retailer ,100% blu ray although they have a small blu ray range, but no HDDVD in site!

EZYDVD.com.au - online retailer with some B&M stores, sell both formats.
Ive read that these guys say its 50/50 or in favour of hddvd. my opinion is that they are probably the only place you can find a range of HDDVD, hence their stats are different.
==============================================

My conclusion is that even if i wanted HDDVD i cant find any stores that sell it and if they do then its a limited selection of slow moving stock with stale and high prices. Or Im forced to go online to ezydvd. Unlike blu ray where there is competition , moving stock , wide range and falling prices. A few months ago new releases were $44 now they have fallen to$35-$39 and you can get some of them for $29.95 at Big W.

second to the above :

I've also been to Singapore a few times this year.

In Feb2007 HMV Orchard Road (the biggest music store there) had 1 self split even with HDDVD and Blu ray.

last week I was back there and the shelf space has doubled and the allocation is 75% blu ray 25% hdvd !

Cheers
