Default POTC framed wrong?

I was perusing the AVSForum and a guy has posted this thread....

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=898666

He says that the first POTC film is framed wrong....people's heads being cut off, etc.

I've never noticed this, but I'm not home to verify......could this be true? I find it very difficult to believe that no reviewer or anyone else has seen this.....

I just confirmed it...and unfortunately he is 100% right...In the DVD version Norringtons full head and hat are in the shot with space even over and above that visable. In the Blu-ray version from above his eyes and up are completely out of the shot.

Edit: I have viewed a couple other shots and there seems to be the same thing.

I find this insignificant, I watched POTC plently of times and even if that problem is there it makes no difference the movie is still entertaining. I guess it's just up to viewer if that sorta thing bothers them.

It's an irritating oversight to be sure, but it doesn't really mean anything(except that people should wait and buy all 3 movies as a boxed set, since they'll likely be redone for such..especially considering this). Nor would it mean anything if it were HDDVD that had experienced this...it just shows how much HDDVD fans have to grasp at straws.

Looks like he's right

This is a director approved transfer though (DGA requirements) so either he didn't look too hard (possible, he was finishing Pirates 3), or he wanted to change his framings.

Hopefully Disney will let us know, and offer an exchange.

Unfortunately this is probably something that would not warrant Disney to recall, or offer an exchange so to speak, since it would cost the company too much money.

It had to be an oversight one would think, there is nothing gained in the shot by framing that close in.

further proves my point of, what you don't know...you don't miss.

I am one of the few people here who prefers 1:78:1 and 1:85 aspect ratio.
I dont like watch my 50" become a 40".

Just for shizzles I sent an email to Bill Hunt at the bits to see if he's heard anything regarding this. Universal had to replace a lot of copies of Back to the Future 2 for the same issue.

I'm not saying don't tell Disney to fix it. But, so many people were awed by it, enjoyed it and noticed nothing, clearly it can't be that big a deal.

It's only a big deal if you have an agenda and it appeals to your "Cause"

Guys, for all we know, the director may have decided to redo the framing of certain scenes for the Blu-ray release.

Unless we get confirmation from Disney that it was indeed an error, we cannot assume that it was not intentional.

However this in no way shape or form detracts from the entire viewing experience...and even if flawed, HD-DVD will never (hopefully) get it.

Well since you put it that way, I agree with you 100%.

PS. I watched the Pirates movies and didn't notice any cropping problems, at least no bothersome ones.

How off are we talking?
Is this for the entire film or just certain scenes?
Does this affect PotC AND PotC2?

Even though I think the OP at AVS was looking for ideas on what to do because it bothered him, I'm afraid it's just going to add fuel to the HD DUD zealots who will now take this and run with it.

I posted on there asking him to contact Disney to hopefully find out what the real story is before basically jumping off a bridge.

So that's what was wrong with this! I thought there was stuff getting cut off, but I was like "yeah, it's my imagination since, come on, this is a Blu-Ray here". Disney should offer an exchange program.

You know, the movie was shot in Super-35 (mean it was shot on a 1.33 Silent aperture camera) so you can frame it up and down a lot. There are standards to be followed in printing and scanning. The question is, which is the more accurate transfer, the low resolution EE ridden forehead showing one, or the high definition forehead cutting one that looks better than an average movie house?

I'd have to watch the particular scene again, but please don't tell me cut foreheads automatically mean improperly framed dramatic shots.

And I hope this ain't comparing it to a open matte version (4:3, 16:9) of this 2.39 Scope movie.
