Australia Gladiator Blu-ray Replacement Info

Got an email from Universal Australia (I sent them an email ages ago, before I got in touch with Uni NZ).

Quote:
Dear Hamish,

Thank you for your e-mail. We would like to thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding Gladiator blu-ray.

Universal Pictures Australia has been pleased with the success of Gladiator on Blu-ray, which has resulted in a high level of customer satisfaction. However, whilst there was no technical fault on the original Blu-ray master, a small number of enthusiasts have expressed a preference towards slight technical alterations. After careful consideration, we have revisited the mastering process to address those concerns.

If you wish to exchange your original DVNR (digital video noise reduction) feature disc we ask that you send us just your disc 1 in an envelope with your name and address enclosed. Please keep your original packaging and we will post you out a new disc 1.

Please note new discs will not be available for approximately 1 month.

Australian customers can send their original disc 1 to:
Universal Pictures Australia
‘Gladiator Exchange’
PO Box 17
Millers Point NSW 2000

New Zealand customers can send their original disc 1 to:

Attn: Jesse Joseph
Universal Pictures
PO Box 617
Shortland Street
Auckland
1140
Alternative Direct Address for New Zealand (Recommended by Jesse):
Quote:
Site 3 Stable Building
30 St Benedicts Street
Newton
Auckland

Good going Kai, nice to see you flying the flag for the little guy.

I especially like this line "whilst there was no technical fault on the original Blu-ray master, a small number of enthusiasts have expressed a preference towards slight technical alterations"

No technical fault? Slight technical alterations? LMAO

About time. Now that it's actually in place I can buy it. I refused to until it was up and running here. Target has the slipcovered version for under $20 if I remember correctly.

So does this mean if we want the re-mastered version, we have to buy the original movie off the shelf and then send the disc away?

Either that or buy the 'Robin Hood/Gladiator' two pack.

Look what I found!:

Now that this whole transfer fiasco is finally being resolved I went out in search of Gladiator. Well, luck would have it that I found a lone Steelcase at Big W behind a bunch of other titles. It was marked $37.86. It was truthfully more than I would normally pay. Anyway, as I mentioned in my last post Target has the slipcover version for $20 at the moment, so I thought I'd give it a shot and asked the staff member at Big W to call Target and price match on the Gladiator 2-Disc Definitive Edition (not mentioning Steelcase or slipcover). They called and did that and sure enough: scored this bad boy for $20.

Couldn't be happier as I refused to buy it until I knew I could get a decent version, but I was worried I'd missed the limited packaging. Now I can check out the horrid transfer before sending off and getting the real deal!

Definitely worth a shot! Just make sure your local Target has it in stock to price match and you should be good.

And what makes that Tin version even better is that the 'M' ratings logo is removable because its on a plastic sticker

Yeah, unlike the Paramount ones Universal gets a big thumbs up when it comes to sticker ratings logos. Warner Bros also used stickers for The Dark Knight and Harry Potter 6.

The stickers on the Gladiator case lasted long enough to take a photo and now they're gone!

First off, went to JB but they didn't have it. Then went to Target and they had the slipcover for $20 like you said, so i went to Big W and they had the steelcase for $37 aswell and when they price checked with Target, they said they didn't have a 2 disc special edition on bluray!!!
The only difference between the two copies is the slipcase/steelcase isn't it? Apart from that, the features and everything is the same?

Yep, everything's the same. Just ask them to price check for the "2-Disc Definitive Edition". Hell, I even told the guy at Big W where the Target staff member could find the disc to price check. I deliberately checked at Target first and left it sitting in the middle row at the front of a stack of films so it would be easy to find.

Why didn't i think of that! The copy i found at Target was down the bottom near the floor on the right hand side! I'll bet they did a quick scan and that was it.

I might try another Big W store and take your advice about getting it price checked.

I love Gladiator, but this seems like a lot of effort to get a movie that i'm just going to have to send away for a swap, only to find they'll probably bring out a proper re-master release!!!

The version I saw at Target was the "2 Disc Definitive Edition" in a slipcase whereas the "2 Disc Definitive Edition" at Big W was in a steelcase. The cover for the slipcase looks exactly the same as the steelcase version, except with the blue 'bluray' bar across the top.

Big W should match the price of the Target version regardless of the cases because it's the same "2 Disc Definitive Edition" version of the film, right!?

Yep, well they did for me. I neglected to mention that the Target one was a slipcase.

Sending mine tomorrow. Watched a few of the scenes of the original and what a shocker! I didn't know that all the soldiers surrounding Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in the final arena fight had forcefields on. Those Romans were innovative.

How the hell they thought that picture was acceptable is beyond me.

Guess what I just bought!? I finally got the steelcase version for $20. I haven't checked the transfer just yet, but I will before I send it away.

How are you guys sending your disc back? Just in standard envelope like the e-mail suggested? Would the disc even fit in one?

Just do it the cheapest way possible. Uni NZ said to me it doesn't matter what condition the disc is in, it will be replaced.
