Default Peter Gabriel vs Phil Collins

Genesis began life as a progressive rock band with frontman Peter Gabriel, producing works ranging from songs with unusual time signatures and sections to nearly 30-minute long epics such as "Supper's Ready". However, after Gabriel left after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", Collins began to take over as lead vocalist of the band. Over time, Collins began to shift the band from progressive rock to mainstream pop/rock, which in turn made the band commercially successful until Collins' departure to pursue his solo career.

So, what I'm asking is who is better as a frontman and leader for Genesis, and who is a better solo artist? Feel free to discuss your reasons right here.

Peter Gabriel as a frontman and as a solo artist

it`s (always) sad to see when aspiring band goes to pop. and - yes - some might say Gabriel has gone to pop on his solo career lately, but he is still way ahead Collins ! Just check out his movie soundtracks ...

Great question!
OK so I went with PC/PG mostly because PC was able to front the band through many incarnations and was able to evolve with the nucleus, bringing a pop feel to a progressive band whilst keeping the uber-pop confined to his solo stuff.
Make no mistake about it, I LOVE PG and the Genesis he fronted!
I believe PG has the more successful and interesting solo career.

I wish i could give you a detailed response. Unfortunate i have never heard Genesis in their original form with Peter Gabriel, i think i should give that a shot at some stage.

I lean toward Phil Collins as a solo artist, He has made very impressionable songs on me when growing up, more so than Gabriel. And of course i do like Genisis from the eighties very much..

I like Genesis during the Phil Collins area - haven't really listened to the Gabriel Era. I love Gabriel as a solo artist - and Phil Collins just doesn't rate for me.

for me this is not even close. peter gabriel without question. the depth and subject matter of peter's solo work is only a part my reasoning. add in all his humanitarian work (witness / amnesty / global elders / the hub...etc..), his use of and promotion of world music through his label real world and all that he has done with regards to music and technology and it is an easy choice for me.

Although I don't think that a musicians "humanitarian" efforts have anything to do with his/her talent, it could perhaps have an effect on his/her writing...interesting, hmm!

I pretty much agree with skylog's post on the whole!

Phil Collins is talented, but I am much more of a fan of Peter Gabriel, with Genesis and solo.

John, agreed with regards to talent-level, no doubt, but as you said, i think that is why i prefer peter to phil. all of peter's experiences have absolutely (in my mind at least) influenced his writing and music. it is not that i do not appreciate some of phil's work, as i do enjoy the first few genesis albums after peter left, but generally speaking, peter traveled a different path than did phil. that road is more to my liking.

I heard a radio interview with the impersonator Quebec Other Phillipe Gagnon, who was briefly famous in the 80s to sing all the parts of We Are The World on Stage. He talked about the matter of his new show and demonstrated how to reduce its height a little and add some grain turning PC into PG.

I liked Gabriel's solo stuff more than Phil's. But Phil is a fantastic drummer. His work on those early Genesis albums is great.

Agreed, but have you heard Phil's drumming in his fusion band, Brand X? If not, do yourself a favour and listen to the album Unorthodox Behaviour.

Still, as great a drummer as Phil is, I find Peter's solo work to have more substance to it.

I've seen them-

Lamb Lies Down tour- Kansas City, MO
Wind and Wuthering tour- Kansas City, MO
Duke tour- Kansas City, MO
Abacab tour- Berkeley, CA
Mama tour (1984) Oakland, CA
Peter Gabriel- Security tour- San Francisco, CA
Peter Gabriel- Security tour- San Jose, CA
Phil Collins tour- 1985- Dallas, TX It was the show that was filmed for HBO

a couple of Steve Hackett solo tours-Guitar Noir tour (1994) San Diego, CA and a solo performance in Anaheim, CA a few years ago with my friend Tom Griesgraber as the opening act

also Phil Collins as drummer for Robert Plant in Dallas, TX in 1983.

I like Phil better as a frontman. He knows how to connect with the audience, and his voice had real power. I don't like either guys solo albums. I need Steve, Tony, Ant, Mike, etc. to provide the chemistry and make it interesting. It's a shame there was never a complete reunion.

I would choose both as front men but as far as solo goes I only know of PC and haven't heard PG by himself.

I can like both can't I?
