Their last Godard Blu-ray was locked B and they have used coding with DVDs. As for Mean Streets it may be Region ABC because Scorsese got in quite a lot of bother over music rights for the film and although he laughs about it now the rights to it had to be sold off to all sorts of strange people to pay the bills. I believe MGM own a chunk of this in France to.
Either way, if you're fan of film have a shufty through their back catalogue should make you import a Region B player. Movies are no good if you can't watch them! ![]() |

What's the matter, you too good for this ten dollars, huh? You too good for it? It's a good ten dollasss...
Very interested in seeing how this turns out, but I'll probably wait for the Warner release anyway. They've really been on a roll lately, doing new transfers for almost every catalogue release. |

what's really strange is I can't even find Carlotta's bd page on their site anymore.
At one time they had a dedicated page for bd releases, but it appears to be gone. their page is a real mess; the only way to figure out if a "dvd" release has a corresponding bd is to look at each individual release and look for a bd tab. I can't imagine how long it would take to go through every release. crazy. ![]() Last edited by Arkadin; 01-05-2011 at 11:11 AM. |

I haven't heard anything about Warner planning to release it in the US. I'll be getting this French release so long as the subs aren't forced.

This was a really fantastic movie. It has to be understood within the context of the time, which is that no one had ever made a move like this before. The acting is so "real", it seems like they just picked up a bunch of punks from the street. While DeNiro had appeared in "Greetings", he really wasn't well known as yet. And no one had used a rock and roll soundtrack in a major dramatic film the way Scorcese did in this movie, except perhaps for Easy Rider.
When I saw this film in '73, I was not impressed with DeNiro's performance, because even though I had seen him in Greetings (which was more of a comedy), I just assumed he was pretty much like the character he played. Little did I know at the time what a performance this was. Although the BD screens in the review don't look that great (this film was made on a very tiny budget - $300K in 1973, which is the equivalent of about $1.5 million today, a pittance), I would love to see a Region A release of this. Meanwhile, I guess I'll live with the DVD, which is one of the few DVDs that I own that I haven't been trying to sell. For many years after Mean Streets, there were rumors of a sequel. Too bad it never came about. It still could be interesting to see (assuming they survived) what Johnny Boy and Charlie would be like as old men. Would they still live in Little Italy? Would Charlie still be protecting Johnny Boy? Did Charlie ever get his restaurant? Etc. |
