Default Does PS3 work without the HD installed?

Not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this question, but here's my issue:

I had my hard drive in my PS3 crash a few days ago. This isn't really a big deal to me as I was going to upgrade it to a larger one anyways. I have a little bit of time between now and when I get a new drive, so I am wondering if I can remove the drive and still play Blu-ray movies on the PS3? With the hard-drive installed it definitely won't boot up. I'd try this out myself but I'm not at home right now.

Without the operating system (on the HDD), it's probably doubtful.

I also doubt it would work since there is no OS. BTW the PS3 comes with a 1 year free warranty and it was released in Nov. of 06 so you should just send it into Sony and get an extra freebie hard drive.

Oh ok, I didn't realize the OS resided on the HD, thought it might be on flash memory or something... or hoped rather. Yeah I know it will be covered under warranty and I could get another HD, but honestly I'd rather just get a larger HD and be done with it because I'd be doing it anyways and the 60GB drive would be useless to me.

Okay then, now I have a question. If you replace your hard drive, how do you re-install your OS if your original hard drive crashed?

get the 60GB replacement drive. You might use it in a computer or something sometime down the line. You could also get a usb external enclosure and then put the 60GB in it and use it to store files for your ps3. You can also ebay the 60GB hard drive as well and recoup some of the cost for getting the larger hard drive out of pocket

You can't.

The HDD (or storage drive) must ALWAYS be connected to the console as the system performs an I/O check to see if the drive is present.

If not, then the system won't go into XMB menu.
