I seen a 40 or 42" LCD 1080p set at futureshop tonight playing some hi-def baseball. It looked real nice. Whats the word on the street when it comes to LG's LCD tvs? Are they any good. Also what is generally considered to be the best brand(s) in LCDs. I'm looking to buy a new set soon hopefully. Probably in the 40" range.

Not good. From what I've read on here theres a lot of problems with either stuck pixels or banding in the display. One guy on here claims to have returned and exchanged them like 4 different times and had the same problem on each one and then Best Buy or Circuit City wouldn't deal with him anymore so they sent him to LG which pretty much did nothing.
Some people could have positive experiences though. |

No their not. Not even counting their reliability issues their picture quality is on par with a vizio or sylvania in most cases traight outta the box. Very washed out with blue/whites. No good darks, no good brights either.
Calibrated i hear their only slightly better |

Yup, well said. I initially wanted an LG, but after seeing a LG, Vizio and Sony side-by-side, it was obvious the LG was the lesser of the 3. I wound up with the Sony. Get the Vizio for a good picture & price.

Hmm, despite some of the bad reviews of LG, I haven't had any problems with mine, (knock on wood) the picture looks great. And I did compare it to other brands like Sony, and Panasonic. But just in case it does start to screw up, I got the 4 year extended warranty on it.

I had actually went to about 5-6, maybe even 7 stores looking at tv's and the ways that the stores hooked them up. Most stores hooked them up via coax, some analog, and some s-video, so all the tv's looked like crap for the most part but mine looked the best in every store compared to any samsung or sharp or anything. And then I went to Bill Smith's which had the majority of their tv's connected via HDMI and some via component. At that point my tv looked spectacular. But also there was a Samsung there as well that was $800 cheaper that look the same. Samsung only had 2 HDMI while the Sony had 3. Then I noticed the Samsung was using HDMI while the Sony was using component so I asked the guy to give the Sony an HDMI a he did. Whala! Theres my tv. Absolutely the best tv hands down IMHO. But, I didn't buy it from them since I knew somebody that could get it at cost ![]() P.S. Some stores will give the tv that is on sale that particular week a better picture in order to sell them even if it is not truly a better picture than others. You have to look at its connections. |

And both of them had serious clouding. You can't see things like that in the shops as they always have their lights on. Finally I've exchanged it to a Samsung Full HD Panel and this one is much much better. The black level is great, now it's fun! Hope this helps... |

Life is not good with LG but they seem to be making heavy presence in most stores these days with low pricing. My local Best Buy is loaded with them now and there's barely a Sony left in the place. It's sickening.

Hey, if you get a single 1080p source running on the panels and not a split amp'ed 1080i signal, they rock. Most stores run splitters and amp's through Component at best. Many use frickin' Cat-5 wire. Unbelievable how panels even sell when they're hooked up like an idiot did it.

LG's previous name was Goldstar which was cheap junk. I'm sure they have improved with the change in name and commitment. But only time will tell.
Vizio TV's are excellent all-around when considering value and price. They don't have as good a picture as the name brands and where you really notice this is in the black levels, however for the money they are still very good. |
