Let's boost up Blu-ray sales. Blu-ray is starting to go up in sales while dvd is declining, it is far from being the standard. It only has I would guess a 20% market share. Not sure, just know that last year(or 2009) the market share for blu-ray was 13%
In order to help Blu-ray, I'll pick 4 days this year. On February 16, June 25th, September 19, and November 11th, go to your local store and pick up 5 Blu-rays on each of these days. Also, you must vow to not buy a single dvd in 2011 no matter how cheap or discernable the blu-ray version is from the dvd. This may seem like a foolish, futile attempt at helping blu-ray, but dependind on how many people we get, it could make a real difference and cause a dent in dvd since none of us will buy any. Let's just say that 250 people agree to this. 5 x 250=1,250 x 4 days=5,000 extra blu-ray units sold. That's not taking into account that Blu-ray sales increase annualy even without this and that 0 dvd's will be bought. We should try. |

I'm sure you mean well, but it's a silly idea that won't have any effect.
Plus getting people to all buy on the same day is a big issue as well, just let people buy what they want. Blu-Ray is growing just fine by itself and will only get bigger in the future. |

I'm just sick and tired of ignorant ****s that think there is no point in Blu-ray, and at this point, deserves a far bigger market share.I don't want dvd to be like vhs. vhs's were not dead(as in no more vhs release) until 2006. That's a full 9 years into dvd's lifespan and the year that hd-dvd and blu-ray were introduced. The idea of dvd still going until 2015 is disheartening. We all know that dvd is as of now pointless unless there are movies or older tv shows on dvd that never have a possibilty of coming to blu-ray. The movies really aren't an issue. So many old movies are being released monthly, so why is dvd still here? Why did vhs last so long after dvd's introduction? will dvd last just as long? |

It's pretty natural for old formats to last for awhile. As a whole, many people wait to jump into a new format until prices drop. For that to occur, market penetration has to grow as well. It's kind of a catch-22 that means that market dominance is going to take awhile.
I personally stopped buying DVD's years ago. That's personal preference. But at the same time, I'm not going to run out and purchase five on any given day. I personally make what I feel are smart purchases based on price and desire of the product. Even if every single one of us on the site followed through, it would just be a bump in sales and certainly wouldn't mean a death of the DVD market. New release BD's like Inception are beginning to outsell DVD's, and that's essentially the death you're looking for. I don't know why it matters to you as long as your preferred title comes out on your format of choice. Hell, I wouldn't care if they continued to make DVD's and even VHS. It has no impact on me. |

With the price of blu-ray players now under the $100 mark, blu-ray sales are going go be increasing steadily. Hell, my brother decided to pick up a blu-ray player last month because his dvd player died on him. I told him that the prices have dropped dramatically on the players, and the movies are much more reasonable now if you just look around or wait for a sale price. I gave him his first 2 blu's for Christmas. A better idea would be to see how many friends or family members we can convert to blu in 2011, and post the results. I haven't had a chance to talk to my brother yet, but hopefully, his next movie purchase will be in blu. Last edited by mr. b; 01-03-2011 at 12:51 AM. |

I can't remember the last DVD I bought but I can't think of a single reason why I should care whether they're still sold or not.
A lot of people have dvd players in their cars or in kids rooms or other secondary places. Why should I care whether those players get replaced tomorrow or a few years from now (or whether they ever get replaced, for that matter)? |

Isn't the whole point of collecting movies, to try and acquire movies you enjoy in the best format possible? Some movies will never see a Blu-ray release. Should I ignore any and everything that isn't Blu-ray, in hopes that such action will spurn the powers that be?
Just because a movie gets released on Blu-ray, that doesn't necessarily mean it will have a quality transfer. The key word being quality. I want the best quality available for the movies I enjoy and still seek. If that happens to be DVD right now, so be it. In my opinion, the focus should be on the pleasure and quality of the movies we collect, not the flavor of the day medium. |

I think it's safe to say that we all do our part to contribute towards the success and market share of Blu-ray. A good friend of mine finally jumped aboard the Blu-ship this holiday season and I was happy to hear him say "wow..this looks so much better than DVD"..so it is happening, but it will take some time.
The last true DVD that I bought was in '08 when Universal was still HD DVD exclusive. I really wanted American Gangster and had no choice but to buy the DVD. It was the 3-disk collector's edition. I paid around $25 for it then and now it's $1.45 on Amazon. Last edited by sfmarine; 01-03-2011 at 01:24 AM. |

An example is a friend I talked to 2 weeks ago. We were talking about movies and he said he got "..." on dvd.I reply with "who still buys dvd's?" He comes back with "oh, you watch blu-ray?" I say"yeah, of course. Why wouldn't I? Blu-ray is so much better" Then his remark was so stupid, so typical of a person afraid of technology changing. he said "Big deal! So you can see a guy's sweat" I say "of course, why wouldn't I wanna watchmovies with significantly better picture quality and audio. It's only logical. It makes the overall experience better." the conversation ends when he says "I don't really care!" to that in a really angry, defensive tone. Another example, is I've got quite a few friends that have PS3's, HDTV's, and that are hooked up with HDMI and they don't buy blu-ray at all. They only buy dvd. |

I don't think downloads will replace physical media anytime soon but I could see the next generation of physical media being solid-state. RAM discs and the like are not yet either cheap enough or reliable enough but I think they'll get there with time to spare.
Or not. I've gotten way easier things than this wrong. |
