Very nice indeed

The way I'm reading the Lionsgate press release the titles you have listed for June 13 will be released May 23. The other Lionsgate titles will be released in June/July and some of those could be in the June 13 batch but we don't know yet.

How does $40 compare to the retail price of dvds in the USA? also, what do you think the Uk price for Blu-Ray movies is likely to be based on this info.

Yeah it looks like you're right. I may have messed that up because I was reading another article about LG's announcement at the same time which wasn't as clear.

Default Blu-Ray in May

http://news.com.com/Sony+sets+Blu-ra...l?tag=nefd.top

Sony Pictures on Tuesday said it aims to deliver its new Blu-ray Disc DVD format to U.S. stores on May 23 to coincide with the entry of compatible disc players, a new step in an industry war for control of home movie viewing.
Photos: Worst-dressed gadgets? Blu-ray and HD DVD players

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment will first release eight Blu-ray titles, followed by another eight in mid-June. The first movie titles include "50 First Dates," "The Fifth Element," "Hitch" and "House of Flying Daggers."

Blu-ray is locked in a multibillion-dollar standards war against a rival DVD format known as HD DVD. The technology companies supporting HD DVD, championed by Toshiba, plan to start rolling out movie titles and disc players in March.

Each side hopes to reignite a sagging $24 billion home video market with new players and discs that offer greater capacity and interactive features.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, a division of Japan's Sony, earlier this month disclosed pricing for Blu-ray
format discs, which amounts to a premium of about 15 percent to 20 percent to the current DVD standard.

The company said on Tuesday that its target delivery date would coincide with the launch that day of the first commercially available Blu-ray Disc player by Samsung Electronics. Other Blu-ray players are scheduled for release from Sony and Pioneer.

did somebody say something about a delay?
wonder when ps3 will come out...

Crash (Lions Gate) $39.99 MSRP
Lord Of War (Lions Gate) $39.99 MSRP
The Devil's Rejects (Lions Gate) $39.99 MSRP

Wow, they really don't want to sell these movies do they, $30 is pushing it as it is for a movie, even though I like having the retail packaging $40 would push me to want to just get pirated movies.

It'll cost you less than $40 at most stores. Universal "Collector's Edition" DVDs were $34.99 MSRP but now can many of them can be found in better versions for $10-15. So it's not like the prices won't come down with BD just as they did with DVD. It'll likely take a couple of years and you'll probably get better versions.

Yup, waiting sucks. That's why I give in and hand over my paycheck each week.

When one does so much waiting as a videophile, one tends to get used to it.

Mind you, the anticipation can be quite unbearable at times.

Default bd player

Just wonder how one can play the bd disc to be released on May 23 if the earliest bd player shipment is sometime in Fall, 2006?

The Samsung player was originally planned for May 23, but it has been pushed back to June 25. By fall you should have Samsung, Pioneer, Sony and Panasonic available in stores (possibly Philips as well).

Great, I hated the hybrid idea from the get go. I much prefer artwork on the top of the disc, flippers always sucked with DVD.

Last Samurai is an HD DVD title only thus far. Will you wait for the BD or support both formats?

The list is only for BD titles. My mistake, I forgot I had the initial Warner titles listed. Sorry, my bad.

Blu-ray hybrids actually allowed the DVD content to be stored above the Blu-ray content on the same side of the disc. This is possible because DVD is deeper in the disc than the Blu-ray material. No flipping - you get to keep the artwork!

I am a bit bummed considering that reports currently are that almost all (or all?) first generation Blu-ray titles will be single layer, which is what is necessary for the underlying DVD content to be there.

My understanding was that the BDA gave up on the idea of hybrids and instead some of the supporting studios may package a BD and a DVD together for select titles. Just as was done for some UMD releases.
