Yup, that is what it seems like. There hasn't been any announcements yet. The release date keeps getting pushed back. I pre-ordered a copy at Borders for cheap just in case there's something added and different than the original one I own.

Also, wasn't the first release a thin pack with 3 small cases? Or even 3 full size BD cases? (I might be thinking of how they packed Samurai 7)

And this is one case (probably in a slip cover)

The first release had 3 discs that came with 2 regular blu-ray cases in a slipbox.

If this is the exact same release as before, I will just get the DVD release since I don't want to overpay for a DVD port.

Official cover art and release date.

Amazon lists it as three discs and a release date of 5/24/11. The site is listing 3/1/11, although I am unsure as to why right now.

One of my favorite series. I've spent nearly $200 buying the limited edition box and each volume individually, but held off on the BD when I found out about the bad PQ.

So just after a month before this is released and yet I haven't found any more details regarding this re-release. In fact the most information I found on this BD is all in this thread. Has anyone else somehow found more info on this? I was hoping for more special features, and of course better PQ.

I talked to the FUNimation rep when these titles were first "announced" by retailers.

It is just a repackage of the existing set, smaller. The double case boxed sets take up too much store space, and they want to get their product on shelves. This is one way to do it. Three disc one case versions.

Do not expect a remaster or anything different. Unless something has changed, which I highly doubt since my source does work for the company and has for some time, this is only for those who didn't buy in earlier. I'd love to be proven wrong, but this is straight from their mouths.

Watch thsee re-releases come in Fake-ray packaging (BD in a DVD case) when funimation is touting 'slimmer' packaging.

Believe me, I'm not above calling out studios for less than stellar transfers, I just don't think Samurai Champloo is that bad.

i agree that poor efforts should be called out. i disagree about this one not being that bad, though.

i will say, though, that no matter what, it isn't fair to call for the heads of FUNimation for issues on titles like this or FLCL, when they don't have or there isn't an HD master. it's just the name of the game for anime. they are NOT a bad distributor by any means, they put out a ton of content, at a great price (especially when compared to their competition!!!!), and their track record is pretty bloody good. i still think Ouran High School Host Club is their greatest upconvert job, with this one being the worst. FLCL, honestly, doesn't count in my eyes. that one has always looked bad.

If they went back and re-did it, I'm sure it'd look better, their upscaling techniques have moved along so much.

At this new price with a decent transfer, hotcakes, but no. Couldn't be arsed, could they?

Did any of you guys compare the screenshots from this set to the shots from the last set?

The reviewer saying that this has the same transfer as the last release is false. The shots don't look the same so it appears that Funi have indeed did a new encode for it. The intentional grain is present on the new set unlike the last set where it was scrubbed away with DNR and the heavy smearing is gone too. It looks much better to me.
