Blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, PS Vita enables revolutionary gaming experiences with dual analog sticks, front and rear cameras, front multi-touch display, multi-touch rear pad, GPS, six-axis motion sensors, and three-axis electronic compass. Among the titles in development for PS Vita are offerings from some of the biggest franchises as well as a myriad of original titles. ![]() ![]() KEY FEATURES

A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, PS Vita offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through “touch, grab, trace, push and pull” moves of the fingers. ・Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, PS Vita adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users’ hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience. ![]() Every game title for PS Vita will be provided with a space called “LiveArea™” where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation Network. The new application called “near,” developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance. ・New Game Medium PS Vita adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated to PS Vita software titles. Taking advantage of flash memory, this innovative card can store full game titles plus save data and add-on game content. By adopting a flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tokyo, June 7, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) (PCH-1000 series) as the official platform name for the next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP). Wi-Fi model will be available for 24,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, $249 in US and €249 in Europe, 3G/Wi-Fi model will be available for 29,980 yen (including tax) in Japan, $299 in US and €299 in Europe and successively launch in global market starting the end of 2011. "Vita", which means "Life" in Latin, was chosen as the most appropriate name for the next generation portable entertainment system as it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user's daily life into an entertainment experience. PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new game play experiences never before seen on any device, allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" finger motions. Also PS Vita features two analog sticks which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience, such as shooters, action games, and fighting games. Exciting and attractive new titles are scheduled to be released from SCE Worldwide Studios, including "GRAVITY DAZE", "Uncharted Golden Abyss", "Little Deviants", "Hot Shots Golf", "Reality Fighter", "Hustle Kings", "ModNation Racers", "Wipeout 2048" and "Super Stardust Delta," as well as from a broad range of third party game developers and publishers, which will deliver value only possible on PS Vita. Also, by having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for users to "encounter," "connect," "discover," "share" and "play" with friends wherever they are. On January 27, 2011, SCE announced the first PS Vita application, "near", which will come pre-installed. It will let users discover what games PS Vita users in the vicinity are or were recently playing, as well as let users share their game information. "near" also enables location-based gaming features such as "gifting," in which a user can access virtual game-related items that other users are sharing, through checking in at geographic locations that others have also visited. The virtual items can include content unlocked from games, such as character costumes, weapons, and treasures. Sharing these items between users adds a unique dimension to the portable gaming experience on PS Vita while enhancing the social connectivity among the PS Vita community. Additionally, PS Vita will come pre-installed with a newly developed application called "Party." "Party" is an innovative application for a portable entertainment system which enables users to enjoy voice chat or text chat not only during online gaming, but also when users are playing different games or using different applications such as internet browser. Through "Party", which offers a new form of social networking, and "near", which enables users to share their game information with other users anywhere, anytime, users can dramatically expand the boundaries of interactive communication. Also a tutorial application called "Welcome Park," developed specifically to guide every user about PS Vita's brand new user interface such as the front touch display and the multi-touch pad on the rear, will come pre-installed. By playing "Welcome Park", users can easily become accustomed to the three dimension-like finger motions used on PS Vita. SCE will vigorously promote PS Vita towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and work towards expanding the portable gaming market. ![]() ![]() January 2011 'PlayStation Meeting' HD Videos: Opening PlayStation Suite NGP Reveal Demos: Uncharted, Little Deviants, LiveArea UI Demos: Near Location-Based Entertainment, Hot Shots Golf Next Capcom: Enhanced PSP Backwards Compatibility, MT Framework Mobile, Lost Planet 2 Tech Demo SEGA: Yakuza OF THE END Tech Demo Tecmo KOEI: Dynasty Warriors Tech Demo Kojima: Metal Gear Solid 4 Tech Demo, MGS Anywhere, Dream Project Epic: Unreal Engine 3, Enhanced Epic Citadel Tech Demo, Dungeon Defenders Activision: Call of Duty Announcement Closing January 2011 Press Release and Interface Photos: [Show spoiler] ![]() ![]() List of Third Party Game Developers and Publishers As of June 7th, 2011 (in alphabetical order of developer/publisher) [Show spoiler] PlayStation Vita Product Outline As of June 7th, 2011 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Shin-Ra; 11-25-2011 at 01:57 AM. |

Some stuff. It is really nice to hold, the screen is absolutely amazing. I mean the best I have ever seen on a portable device. The analogue sticks are actually better than the ones on DS3, but they are a bit uncomfortable because of the position. Back touch is interesting, but none of the games really used it so much. It maps directly to the screen, you can use it in lieu of the touch screen and it may be used for L2/R2. It supports a maximum of 5 simultaneous inputs as does the front screen.
The bottom of the device is actually bigger than it needs to be because the analogues would be completely unusable if it were as small as possible. The way I see it, it will launch for a reasonable price when compared to smartphones and comparable touch screen devices (iPod Touch), but it won't be cheaper than the 3DS in the US. It will be more competitive in the rest of the world though. Last edited by Maximus; 01-28-2011 at 02:49 PM. |

That was the best conference Sony had in a long time, let's recap the pros and cons:
Pros: + Dual Analogs! + Capacitive front touchscreen and rear pad + Flash/PSN dual release for major titles + PSP/PS1/Minis BC confirmed + Trophies + PlayStation Suite + ARM® Cortex™-A9 core (4 core) + SGX543MP4+ + 3G and wifi, apparently up to each region to decide on which SKUs to bring out + Unreal Engine 3 looks and runs amazing on the machine + Easy to port existing games from PS3/360 and PSP + Cross platform play and continuous play possibility confirmed + Uncharted looks and plays awesome + Hot Shots Golf Next, wow + Little Deviants looks like the innovative, handheld only title that Sony needs and didn't push on PSP until late in its life + LBP, Resistance confirmed + Off the shelf CPU/GPU parts suggest that Sony will make a profit early and we'll have bigger and better iterations sooner + 2 cameras + GPS + N wi fi + Near and LiveArea PSN service Cons: - Lots of things are unconfirmed so far, western 3rd party support (EA, THQ, Take 2), HDMI out, build in storage, PSN BC (including Dreamcast, NeoGeo and PCEngine games), camera resolution, etc - Proprietary storage solution - Executives avoiding the price question and suggesting the 3DS is decently priced, that makes me nervous about pricing - Fall 2011 is too far, and JP only so far - Not really pocketable (that's not a minus for me but is for a lot of folks) - The New UI needs some work That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Overall, A+ conference. |

It had to be proprietary, otherwise it opens the door to piracy very easily. Pricing will be ok for the Wifi version in Europe and Japan the 3G version will probably be sold with a network subsidy. I can't confirm which networks, but Sony are talking to all of the majors around Europe. It is pretty far out, but that is the only way to get production costs and capacity up before launch. Otherwise it will be expensive and there will be lots of shortages. UI isn't final. Last edited by Maximus; 01-28-2011 at 03:15 PM. |

As long as there isnt a 9 month wait from Japanese launch like there was with PSP I really don't mind.
3g for the UK is pretty useless as all the mobile companies cap their speeds. T-Mobile for example only give me 0.35Mbps Down 0.12Mbps up and 154ms Ping on average. Thats on my htc Desire. Dongles on the other hand offer up to 7Mbps but as with home broadband it hardly reachs top speeds and your limited to only 3gb of data a month at the cost of £20! So in my opinion I'm happy to go with the cheaper Wi-Fi only SKU. |

Wifi only : $350 Wifi + 3G : $450 I mean when the PSP launched it was $250 I believe and so was the PSPGo. With all the tech this thing has I can't see it being under $300. Honestly I think if anybody expects that they are crazy. |

There is footage out there of the Uncharted game being developed for this unit. It looks like I'll have to upgrade my PSP when this releases... even though I've only used my current PSP for about 5 hours in total since I got it 2 Christmas' ago.

I'm hoping for ~$300 for the wifi. Does that mean SKU without 3G were confirmed?
Right. I guess I was focused too much on PSN and less on the translations. What sort of BC with PSP was confirmed? |
