I am in the "massively amusing" category!!
I saw Rubber a couple weeks back and have been thinking about it and talking about it quite a lot since. What I see is a very biting satire on both movie audiences and the movie industry itself... specifically the banal, cliched output of the Hollywood cash machine. To my mind, the "no reason" gimmick is a bit of a red herring, as I see a lot of reason behind Rubber (and also the examples of "no reason" given in the intro are deliberately false). There are possible spoilers below: [Show spoiler] There is, of course, a lot more to it than that, with subtle, and not-so-subtle, digs and references. I get an almost-Lynchian feel while watching the movie, and enjoy speculating on what certain sequences have to say about the movie industry and its audiences. The IMDB boards for Rubber have plenty of opinions on some of the meaning (or lack-of) behind Rubber, and was a great read. I do agree that the film was a bit-hit and miss. I have no problem with the length (hell, its only 78 minutes guys!!!) but there were some sequences that were either too extraneous or unnecessary. But if all you see is a 'killer tyre' movie, then I think you have missed the point. In terms of the transfer, I was blown away at the clarity of this low-budget, 'shot on cheap digital' movie... the richness of the early desert sequences was mind blowing, and really makes me wonder why so many studio releases struggle to look anywhere near as vivid. On a final note... the cover art is pretty cool, but there are already a couple of great poster designs for this movie, and may end up making my own cover.
