Default Firefly. a new effort to bring it back

A few efforts were made to get Firefly back or a new Serenity movie over the past 5 years. After Nathan Fillion mentioned that if he won the lottery he would buy the rights to the show and put in on the internet, some folks started the Help Nathan Buy Firefly group - on facebook and a website helpnathanbuyfirefly.com
Fox Network, that owns the rights, said they would not sell. Fillion told fans to not send him any money and discouraged the idea. But fans rallied at Facebook gaining a hundred and thirteen thousand members.
The admin that started the group, with experience in fund raising, focused the group to not donating any money, but asked how much they would pledge to getting Firefly back on the air. The idea that if enough fans contribute there may be avenue's for licensing and funding production for the show to continue.
I've been a fan of the show since the movie came out and followed all the efforts to bring it back. This one seems the most intriguing.

I don't see a way this changes anything. First off Fox isn't going to sell the rights, but even if they did, what channel would air the show if they did somehow bring the show back? What studio would produce it? Who would own the rights? Maybe more importantly is while Fillion can talk about wanting to bring the show back the fact is he couldn't star in it. He's already got a hit show on ABC and there's no way they would let him leave. There are so many business elements to this that there's virtually no chance the show ever returns.

I hear ya, but im not that skeptical. Nathan mentioned an interest in putting the episodes online (for a fee). Most of the crew and cast have a strong affinity to the show, and I know Joss has more stories to tell that are probably sitting in a folder at his home. Also, Joss met with FX network president a few months ago. The numbers Firefly put up are very good for a cable network. If fans collaborated financially with a willingness to cover the cost of licensing and rebuilding the set, wouldn't this open up a discussion to make it work? Joss worked on three shows simultaneously before, and the actors are not locked down from doing side projects.

If they really going to make new episodes I would be glad to pay a decent amount of money for it. But then I wouldn't want them web based, but straigth on Blu-ray.

I think if it happened, blu ray and dvd would be a requisite since that is where most of the revenue came from. I would like to see the scantron numbers of their sales.

This is not Nathans idea. He said on twitter not to send money.

yea, as I posted. they are only using his name as a pop-cultural reference to a quote he made earlier. Their mission has nothing to do with Nathan.

Yeah not to mention they did not air the pilot first. Fox screwed Joss over on both Firefly and Dollhouse but more so Firefly. Joss should deal with other networks from now on.

They did the same thing with Futurama. Someone at Fox apparently has a grudge against well-written and funny sci-fi.

Yea, I agree. Fox really screwed Whedon, no matter what they say. They're one of the worst networks when it comes to things like this. The only thing I'm grateful to them for is the fact that they kept The X-Files as long as they did, even if the last season wasn't very good. But they have a bad habit of cancelling good shows (Terminator, Firefly) and keeping other shows past their prime (House, 24). I think they really need to rethink they the way they do things.

They did it to Terminator: TSCC and Brisco County Jr. as well, so I agree, Fox has something against really entertaining, funny, sci-fi shows. It's really a bummer. I'm actually surprised to see that Fringe has lasted so long to be honest.

In case no one noticed Firefly started reairing last night on the Science Channel and it will be airing on Sunday nights to come!

As for restarting the show there is no way the Fillion will leave Castle its a bon afide hit and a great show!

That article is such crap. Don't mention the fact that the show had horrible promotion, a horrible timeslot (Friday night?!) and had the episodes shown in practically random order. Or the fact that it got cancelled after only 5 episodes had been shown. Gee, kind of hard to build a fanbase after all that...

I don't know if the "Help Nathan Buy Firefly" movement will amount to anything. Most likely it won't. But I hope it makes Fox take notice that a lot of people still care about a show they axed. Fans brought back Futurama and Family Guy. Stranger things have happened.

Firefly hasn't been brought back yet. It never will now at this point. We'll likely see a second Serenity though.

Wouldn't fans rallying and donating money just show FOX that the property was worth holding onto and just keeping ti shelved until they could figure out what to do with it? So that would kind of backfire....

Maybe...but then they'll just remake it and fans won't respond to it and will refuse to see it so it would backfire on Fox.

Thumbs up

I would be on board for any Firefly, even if they made it into an internet series like Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog or The Guild.

With Fillion on a huge hit right now, I don't know why the fans are even bothering. I mean it's not like he can just star in a new series. He might get enough time off for another movie IF they could work his schedule around it, but I just don't see anything Firefly ever happening again that's not a comic book or cartoon series.

I'd honestly rather just see another movie than another series...I think it would work out much better for Fillion's schedule and the fans because at least they're getting another story in the Firefly universe.
