![]() ![]() Senso Blu-ray Senso Blu-ray Review There's a review, but no thread. Anyone else pick this up? ..well I did, and it's awesome! The features on Visconti are great and the film is really special. Distaste for melodrama and opera be darned! Last edited by Scottie; 01-18-2017 at 11:51 PM. |

Be that as it may, the moderators like Deci have asked us to start threads on the individual films because the Criterion thread is thousands of pages long and a bit inaccessible to newer denizens.

Does someone know the reason this title has been edited 1.33:1 when the original aspect ratio in theatres was 1.66:1? I haven't found a good reason for that but at the same time, it's strange for Criterion or Studio Canal to do something like that so lightly.
By the way, I understand it shows more because the negative was 1.33:1, so I'm not worried about the picture being cut, but just do something against the director final decission. |

Are you sure it was 1.66:1? This movie was from 1954, right after the change to widescreen, but it's not like theaters were all changed overnight. I'm sure the film was composed for both 1.33:1 (for theaters that couldn't project wide) and 1.66:1 in Europe where possible.
If you're going to argue "Original Aspect Ratio" for mid-50's films, you'll never get a single answer. |

This looks like it might be a great blind buy. Totally dig the beautiful cinematography and the setting.
Do these criterion releases come with a reversible original art cover? Very much dislike the art on all the releases I want to buy. Find it very pretentious. |

Anybody know which release has the proper theatrical color timing? Both StudioCanal and Criterion releases look noticeably different color-wise so I'm wondering which best represents the original look.

Because the French bluray doesn't have English subtitles. personally I like the colors of the French bluray more which haven't got that yellow tint. (in some scenes, because in others they look like the Criterion) though the criterion seems to have better detail, contrast. |

I do have the Criterion, but have to search for it. Will update you when I've found it and tested the audio. |

The Criterion has the movie with Italian: LPCM 1.0 audio and English subtitles. The Wanton Countess cut is in English: Dolby Digital 1.0, but uses a lesser quality master/print as you might know. Oh and it's half and hour shorter too. |
