Thumbs up More Evidence: Sony to launch $399 40GB Playstation 3

Gotta love those "Reliable Sources"

The rumor originated when a "reliable source" mentioned Sony's changing up their Playstation offerings for the Holiday Season like so:

* $499.99 for the 80GB Playstation 3, currently $599.99
* $399.99 for the 40GB Playstation 3, currently nonexistent
* Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray included with at least one of the PS3 packages
* $99.99 for the Playstation 2, currently $129.99

Link

Keywords "Holiday Season". I think Sony would move quite a few PS3 with this move. I wonder what has been stripped out of the 40gb though?

This is all great, but if they can lower the price on a PS3, then they can surely lower the price on a standalone player that JUST plays movies.

When a customer walks into a BestBuy and goes into the DVD player section, he see's an HD-DVD display and a BD display (Either Samung-BDP-S300 or Panasonic) I have only seen the PS3 in the gaming section, therefor unless you are aware it is a BD player, it gets no consideration.

The standalone players purpose right now is to play movies, no games,(except BD-J) no Wi-Fi internet, no hard drive (Yet). Why can't it cost much less???

Sony wouldn't care where they go as long as we buy them.

Edit: Mods, why was my thread moved from the PS3 section?
I saw a rumor on the AVS forum that the 40 gig will not have the integrated wireless card.

I can't believe Sony is still charging 100 bux for the PS2. I would have figured they would pull the plug on it by now. They really do milk the cow dry.

I'm not so sure about this 40GB thing...the hard drive isn't what raises manufacturing costs by any means. Now if it didn't have Wi-Fi, and maybe lack of an HDMI port (like the original 20GB proposal), maybe I'd believe it, but isn't that going against what Sony is trying to sell?

Sony is smart. Rather than going straight to the bottom like Toshiba is, Sony and the BDA wants each manufacturer to make a profit off its players. This is incentive to get more manufacturers to actually make the players.

Do you ever wonder why Toshiba is the only manufacturer of HD DVD players? It's because unless you release a relatively high end player(or an extremely cheap players with inferior parts and build) you will make no money on the players you sell. I am willing to bet that out of all the HD DVD players on the market, the Venturer player will be the most troublesome, and last the shortest amount of time because let's face it, $199 is not going to buy you the same as $399 or $499. Onyko should be a little worried about marketing a player that cost $899 to a camp that has pushed for cheaper and cheaper players.

The fact that the difference between the 20 and the 60 was $100, and the only differnce was the HD space, the card reader and the wifi

At these prices, people can own THREE PS3s! Yes, THREE PS3s!

I for one don't believe the rumor until I see the actual price is posted online.

In other words you're speculating. The way you said it, it seemed like you knew something the rest of us didn't. I'd appreciate it if you note that it's what you're doing, rather than claiming something as fact when you have no links or anything else to base it on. It might very well happen as you suggest, but we'll have to wait and see how exactly Sony will differentiate such a model. Even nuking the card reader and wifi won't drop the console by $100 in manufacturing, so they might look at other ways to increase their margins.

Default Building the long-term consumer base...

It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's long-term (10 years I'm guessing) marketing strategy involves three key components...

1. PS2. Selling more than any other unit besides the Wii while continuing to build a potentially HUGE customer base for the PS3 and its backward compatability.

2. Phased price-point system. Costs come down. Pass the savings on to the consumer multiple times to get new customers (multiple times) once potential buyers have committed at a higher price point.

3. Saturate the market with quality Blu-ray players. The Spiderman Blu-ray SKU accomplishes both 2. and 3. Some gamers want the cheaper system and theatre enthusiasts will like the affordability as well. The interesting thing about this strategy is that the demographic that Sony is appealing to should see their earnings increase greatly over the next decade, allowing them to invest in both games and/or movies and theatre. Its long-term in vision, but it is a classic dual-stream revenue approach. It is far superior to the add-on approach.

It makes sense. NOW BRING ON THE GAMES AND BLU-RAY MOVIES AND WARNER EXCLUSIVITY!!!!
