Are PS3 games region free

I was thinking of purchasing a few games from the US but am unsure if they are region free. I know the PS2 games were region encoded. Any help would be much appreciatesd.

Not yet, but you'll find it hard to find anywhere that will ship from USA into Europe. BDs are fine but games seem to have a restriction on them.

Thats a pity as the prices are much cheaper than here.

This isn't right. ALL PLAYSTATION 3 games are region free. w_tanoto's right about incompatible standard definition resolutions but if you're playing in 720p or above you're fine.

well' I lived in three region. My consoles (PS2, PS3, PSP) are all japanese (not asian), while I lived most of my times in Europe, with holidays in Indonesia.
So, I have japanese PS3, while I have European PSN account (though I also have japanese acc). My advice: try making the US account, download a demo of the game you wish to purchase. If it works, then it works in the full games.

Beware though: several of my european games downloaded from EU PSN does not work in SD mode due to difference between 480i/p and 576i/p. It must be converted to HD mode before it works.
